Sydney, Australia – May 12, 2025 – Shooshfest, Australia's pioneering silent film festival, is back for its second year, promising an evening of unparalleled visual storytelling.
Shooshfest is more than just a film festival; it's a vibrant community celebration of creativity, innovation, and the timeless art of silent cinema. Whether you're a casual moviegoer or a dedicated film critic, Shooshfest offers something for everyone – except one thing: dialogue. No verbose monologues, no whispered secrets, no foley – just raw emotion, tension, and creativity distilled into films of up to 10 minutes.
This festival challenges filmmakers to rethink how they tell their stories, harnessing the power and impact of imagery. They are encouraged to create in a raw and fast-paced manner, tapping into the skills and techniques of their storytelling predecessors from a century ago.
Entrants this year will be judged by a star-studded line up including:
- Rachel Griffiths: The internationally acclaimed actor and director, celebrated for her unforgettable performances in Muriel's Wedding, Hilary and Jackie, HBO's Six Feet Under, and ABC's Brothers & Sisters.
- Mark Joffe: One of Australia's most esteemed directors, boasting six critically acclaimed and commercially successful feature films. His telefeature Boy Soldier earned an International Emmy nomination and won the Liv Ullman Peace Prize at the Chicago CFF.
- Parker Constantine: An emerging writer, director, and film programmer. As the co-founder of Sydney's Underground Film Collective, her work delves into the subversive, the strange, and DIY.
- Flynn Boffo: A rising director, producer, and screen programmer. He co-founded the Underground Film Collective to shine a light on outsider cinema and the DIY filmmaking community in Sydney.
Festival co-creator Rebecca Zemunik explains: "In a world overwhelmed by constant noise and distractions, it's no wonder that Australia's fascination with silent films is making a grand comeback. Shooshfest is a sanctuary where silence speaks louder than words, inviting audiences to dive deep into the purest form of cinematic artistry.
