STEPS Pathways College students step up to the plate

STEPS Pathways College 2 mins read

The air was filled with excitement and mouth-watering aromas at Ready STEPS Cook, a culinary showdown hosted at STEPS Pathways College, a unique college for young adults living with a disability and autism.

Inspired by the popular show Ready Steady Cook, this high-energy cooking competition saw three Day Program Students and three Boarding Program Students team up with their Trainers for a friendly kitchen feud.

STEPS Pathways College Principal Stephanie Patey expressed how proud she is of the students.

“When you give these incredible young people holistic support and empower them with skills and opportunities to achieve their dreams, you see enormous progress,” Ms Patey said.

“It was amazing to witness everyone working together to cook and serve up their delicious meals. Of course, they got to put their cooking skills to the test, but I also saw a lot of communication and determination there. It was heartwarming to see how they supported one another.”

Each team included a student at the beginning of their STEPS Pathways College journey, a student halfway through the experience, and a student getting ready for graduation.

The competition was judged by celebrity chef Matt Golinski, whose culinary wisdom and warmth made him an instant hit with the students.

The Team Captains guiding and supporting the students were beloved Australian food personalities Kim McCosker, creator of the 4 Ingredients cookbook series, and Kate Bracks, winner of MasterChef Australia Season 3 and proud owner of local dessert shop Fifty Acres Gelato.

STEPS Pathways College is an innovative education program pioneering the journey towards independence for young adults living with a disability and autism. Within the guidance of a secure and supportive community, students have the opportunity to thrive as they are empowered to develop skills, knowledge and self-reliance to find and fulfil their full potential.

Beyond the delicious food and friendly rivalry, Ready STEPS Cook was a celebration of the students and the achievements, growth and confidence they’ve displayed in their journey to independence.

“Moments like these put their development on full display and it makes me very proud to witness their incredible growth,” Ms Patey said.

“I am incredibly privileged to form part of the STEPS Pathways College team which is helping students open doors to new possibilities and live a life of their choosing.”

Landmark program launched to paint a national picture of domestic violence support needs

An innovative new research initiative aims to drive systemic change and better support victim survivors of family violence across the country. Launched today, Safety Measures will measure specialist domestic and family violence service need, accessibility and effectiveness. Every person experiencing domestic or family violence in Australia should be able to access the support and safety that they need, when they need it. But no government, entity or agency currently has a full, accurate sense of the scale and nature of support needed across the country or the service system’s capacity to meet this.
