WEDNESDAY: ILLAWARRA WORKERS RALLY AGAINST AGAINST MENTAL HEALTH COMPENSATION CUTS

WHAT: Essential workers from across the Illawarra and South Coast will rally to oppose the NSW government's proposed cuts to workers compensation, which would drastically limit mental health support for injured workers.

WHO: Local nurses, teachers, emergency service workers, and other essential workers, with South Coast Labour Council representatives.

WHY: The NSW government's proposed changes would:

  • Require traumatised workers to undertake legal proceedings before accessing compensation

  • Implement a 30% Whole Person Impairment threshold – Australia's harshest – excluding 95% of legitimate psychological injury claims

  • Rush through changes by 1 July 2025

Union takes RMIT to court over $1 million wage theft from counsellors

The National Tertiary Education Union has launched Federal Court action against RMIT University over allegations it underpaid student counsellors for at least a decade, with affected staff potentially owed more than $1 million in stolen wages. Deakin University admits underpaying staff almost $3 million

The National Tertiary Education Union has welcomed Deakin University's pledge to backpay casual staff underpaid almost $3 million. The university announced on Tuesday it would start repayments, with roughly 440 staff affected by $2.9 million in underpayments over eight years. NTEU members have engaged in a long-running campaign including allegations of systemic underpayment of casual academics in the Fair Work Commission. The total figure is expected to rise beyond $2.9 million as more staff come forward.
