WEDNESDAY: ILLAWARRA WORKERS RALLY AGAINST AGAINST MENTAL HEALTH COMPENSATION CUTS

WHAT: Essential workers from across the Illawarra and South Coast will rally to oppose the NSW government's proposed cuts to workers compensation, which would drastically limit mental health support for injured workers.

WHO: Local nurses, teachers, emergency service workers, and other essential workers, with South Coast Labour Council representatives.

WHY: The NSW government's proposed changes would:

  • Require traumatised workers to undertake legal proceedings before accessing compensation

  • Implement a 30% Whole Person Impairment threshold – Australia's harshest – excluding 95% of legitimate psychological injury claims

  • Rush through changes by 1 July 2025

Union scores major win for secure jobs at the University of Melbourne

Casual and fixed-term contract staff at the University of Melbourne will be prioritised for permanent jobs ahead of external applicants in a major win for workers. The National Tertiary Education Union's recent win in the Fair Work Commission will force the university to overhaul its hiring practices and meet its obligations to create real pathways to secure jobs for precariously employed staff. Deakin wage theft victims forced onto lower pay, insecure work

Deakin University has failed to repay staff underpaid in a major wage theft scandal – and is now forcing those same workers onto even lower pay. Despite admitting systematically underpaying casual academic staff in May last year, staff are still waiting for backpay.
