Allied Health Professionals Rally to Demand Fairness and Recognition

Health Services Union SA/NT 2 mins read

Allied Health professionals across South Australia are mobilising this week in a series of rallies and stop work actions, urging the State Government to honour its commitment to a standalone Allied Health Enterprise Agreement (EA).

The Health Services Union SA/NT (HSU SA/NT) is leading the charge, emphasising that this is a pivotal moment to secure long-overdue recognition and tailored conditions for the sector.

Currently, Allied Health workers are covered under the South Australian Public Sector Salaried Agreement, which does not adequately address the specific needs and roles of professionals such as physiotherapists, radiographers, social workers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, dietitians, psychologists, pharmacists, and sonographers.

This lack of specialised recognition has led to calls for a separate EA that acknowledges the distinct value these professionals bring to the healthcare system.

Allied Health professionals have now been in negotiations with the State Government for more than nine months. Throughout this time, workers have shown patience and commitment, balancing their passion for delivering high-quality care with the need to advocate for fairer conditions. But this process cannot drag on indefinitely.

It’s time for the Government to conclude these negotiations with a fair and respectful agreement so that our members can get on with their lives and their work — without being forced to continue fighting for the basic recognition they deserve.

Quotes attributable to HSU SA/NT Branch Secretary Billy Elrick:

“We’ve been negotiating for over nine months — it’s time for the Government to deliver a fair deal so Allied Health professionals can get on with their lives.”

“These rallies are about securing real recognition through a dedicated agreement that reflects the essential work we do.”

“This is the largest coordinated action Allied Health professionals have ever taken — we’re standing together for fair pay and respect.”

“The HSU has ensured that critical services will not be disrupted, with skeleton crews remaining on site where required.”

MEU welcomes court decision confirming full rights of workplace delegates

The Mining and Energy Union has welcomed today’s Federal Court decision confirming that the Closing Loopholes laws give workplace delegates the right to represent workers on site regardless of labour hire or employment arrangements, delivering a significant win for workers and their unions across Australia. The decision follows a legal challenge brought by the MEU, with the support of the ACTU and its affiliates, after the Fair Work Commission inserted a delegates’ rights clause into modern awards that significantly limited the scope of the rights Parliament intended to provide. Under the Closing Loopholes legislation, workplace delegates were granted new statutory rights…
