Avocados are packed full of nutrition and offer many health benefits.* In 2023/24 Australian avocado growers produced 150,913 tonnes of avocados supplying all year round. Of this volume, Western Australian (WA) growers produced 44%, 65,801 tonnes.** To support WA growers’ efforts this year, Avocados Australia is helping to deliver three events in Manjimup in June. The WA Grower Regional Forum (on Wednesday 18 June, 8.00am to 4.00pm at the Macedonian Community of Manjimup Hall) followed the next day by the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat breakfast (7.30am to 8.45am at the Kingsley Motel Hotel) and then the WA Export Regional Forum (9.00am to 1.20pm in the same venue). Entry is free to all events.
All of WA’s avocado growers, their orchard staff and packers are invited to attend these events. Matt Kleyn, the Chair of Avocados Australia, will be present at each event and is keen to meet with growers. At the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat event, Matt will be joined by Avocados Australia’s Western Australia Director, Duncan Wells.
“I look forward to meeting with the growers who attend these events and to hear about any concerns or feedback they may have,” said Matt Kleyn.
The WA Avocado Grower Regional Forum is supported by Avocados Australia and delivered by the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) as the regional lead, in collaboration with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI) as part of the Hort Innovation funded Avocado industry development and extension project (AV23010). The technical theme for the event is: Pest and disease management.
“Technical content for the forum has been developed with direct input from WA growers through the project’s dedicated WA regional lead, Rachelle Johnstone (DPIRD),” said Bridie Carr, Senior Extension Horticulturist at Department of Primary Industries, Queensland.
The WA Avocado Export Regional Forum is delivered by Avocados Australia as part of the Hort Innovation funded project Avocado Market Access and Trade Development (2024–2029) (AV23003). It will provide the latest updates on exports, from market access developments to new insights on export outturn quality. The event is aimed at supporting the industry to grow the export sector, with practical information to help growers and packers better understand and participate in avocado exporting.
John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia, will be attending all three events and encourages WA growers who have any questions or issues to raise them at the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat Breakfast.
“Events like these provide growers with the chance to fact find and source the best information to help them improve their businesses,” said John Tyas.
