Battery boom: SA leads the country on combined household, community, and grid-scale battery progress

AUSTRALIA’S BATTERY BOOM is gaining traction, with South Australia ranking first in the country for its sweeping achievements in grid-scale and household battery storage, according to the Climate Council’s latest report: “Battery Boom: Supercharging Australia’s Renewable Rollout”.

KEY FINDINGS:

  1. South Australia leads for the highest proportion of households with a battery, at more than 7%

  2. The top-three suburbs ready to take their solar to the next level with home batteries are:

    1. Salisbury (8,400 rooftop solar systems)

    2. Morphett Vale (8,200 rooftop solar systems)

    3. Smithfield (8,100 rooftop solar systems)

  3. There is more than 20 gigawatts of battery storage in the national pipeline; almost double what was planned just a year ago.

  4. Adding two million household batteries would collectively save Australians more than $4 billion a year on their power bills.

  5. In Australia, the upfront cost of big batteries has fallen 20% last year alone.

South Australia is home to the world’s first big battery, the Hornsdale Power Reserve, which charged up in 2017. It has since brought on another five big batteries with several more expected to connect to the grid very soon. Its South Australia Virtual Power Plant and emPowering SA programs are also charging up social housing, private homes, and entire communities.

While the state falls just behind the Northern Territory for the highest proportion of rooftop solar systems with a battery, it presents an opportunity to take energy savings to the next level. The top-three suburbs where this will make the biggest impact are:

  • Salisbury (8,400 rooftop solar systems)

  • Morphett Vale (8,200 rooftop solar systems)

  • Smithfield (8,100 rooftop solar systems)

Climate Councillor and energy expert, Greg Bourne, said: “Around 40 percent of our main energy grid is powered by sun and wind. Batteries are our bridge to a 21st century energy grid; keeping the lights on in our homes, schools, and workplaces as our ageing coal fleet eventually retires by 2040.

“We already generate an excess of clean, reliable, renewable energy from Australia’s abundant sun and wind. Rather than simply letting it go to waste and missing out on the savings, batteries will help soak it all up and put it to good use during periods of high demand.

“As our transport fleet progressively electrifies, those batteries can also help our grid and provide extra resilience to the system overall.”

Climate Council Fellow and energy expert, Andrew Stock, said: “Household, community, and grid-scale battery storage plays a vital role in Australia’s renewable energy transition. States are already making headway in these areas, but we must go further and faster to ensure more Australians can reap the benefits.

“Installing more batteries means more gigawatts of renewable energy we can store. The return on investment for communities: lower bills, less climate pollution from polluting coal and gas, and a more resilient grid.”

Media Release: Energy roadmap shows renewables remain key and AEMO is starting to hear regional communities

For immediate release Monday 15 December 2025 A not-for-profit working for more than a decade with regional communities at the centre of Australia’s shift to renewable energy has welcomed the release of the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) draft Integrated System Plan (ISP) 2026. National Director of the Renewable Energy Alliance (RE-Alliance), Andrew Bray, said AEMO’s ISP is the most comprehensive pathway to energy security by 2050. “It may sound like a lot of acronyms, but AEMO’s ISP is as close as we’ve got to a national roadmap for how we’re going to keep the lights on as Australia’s ageing…

No more excuses: Put people ahead of gas exporters

A broad range of consumer, industry and climate and environment organisations have called upon the Federal Government to put people ahead of gas exporters as the AlbaneseGovernment considers a new gas policy expected to be released any day. Kellie Caught, Program Director, Climate and Energy at ACOSS said “Australia’s focus on gas exports has tripled domestic gas and electricity prices, driving up inflation and household bills. Multinational gas corporations are posting huge profits while people on low incomes are skipping meals, not cooling homes, and going without medicines because they can’t afford their energy bills. “The government must implement gas…

Battery boost welcome but loans are the missing link to slash bills for everyone

Rewiring Australia says the expansion of the home battery subsidy is a positive step, but accessible finance will be critical to ensure lower power bills are shared across the community. The Federal Government yesterday announced an expansion of its Cheaper Home Batteries program, which provides an upfront discount on eligible home battery systems to reduce installation costs for households and small businesses. Rewiring Australia CEO Francis Vierboom has welcomed the expansion while highlighting the need to ensure more households are able to participate as rebates reduce over coming years. “This announcement reflects the growing role household batteries play in an…
