Mining services provider MACA, a Thiess company, has been awarded a five-year contract extension for works at Capricorn Metals Ltd’s Karlawinda Gold Project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The contract, which includes a client option to extend beyond 2030, covers full mining services, including load and haul, drill and blast, engineering and technical services.

The Karlawinda Gold Mine, located 60km south-east of Newman in Western Australia, has a mine life of over 10 years and includes approximately 4000 square kilometres of tenure prospective for further gold discoveries.

In 2020, MACA was awarded a five-year contract for a scope of works that included greenfield development of the mine, non-process infrastructure and sealing of the airstrip, as well as labour and equipment in support of Capricorn’s construction of the mill.

The achievements to date and this contract extension are a testament to MACA’s trusted relationship with Capricorn, built through the close collaboration of the respective teams across a broad range of disciplines.

In addition to the Karlawinda extension and after a thorough process, MACA has also been selected as the preferred mining contractor for Capricorn’s Mt Gibson Gold Project in the Murchison region of WA.

Capricorn Executive Chairman Mark Clark said: “We are pleased to execute the contract extension for the expanded Karlawinda gold project, underscoring our long-standing partnership with MACA built on mutual trust and reliable execution.

“We thank MACA for their strong contribution to our business to date and look forward to working together successfully with them for many years to come.”

Thiess Group Executive – Australia West David Greig emphasised the importance of MACA’s partnership with Capricorn: “Both entities are a proud product of the West Australian mining industry and have a strong understanding of what it takes to assemble quality teams to deliver sustainable value through the cycles.

“Karlawinda and Mt Gibson highlight of the importance of the mining industry to regional employment, career development and positive community outcomes.  We are very proud to be a part of Capricorn’s development.”

Thiess Group Executive Chair and CEO Michael Wright said: “This contract will see MACA further embed their presence within the WA gold industry, which has world-class reserves and production, backed by a strong exploration pipeline.

“The award highlights the commitment by the Thiess Group to support its operating companies to service their respective clients long term, which is critical to our strategy to continue to diversify our commodity portfolio and geographic footprint.”

MACA joined the Thiess Group in 2022. Its service offering to the hard rock mining industry is complemented by the subsequent acquisitions of underground mining service provider PYBAR and engineering service provider Mintrex. MACA remains focused on delivering safe, efficient, and reliable services – harnessing the power of its people and technology to drive sustainable change.
