Media Release: New Research Confirms Leatherwood Honey is Good for More Than Just Your Taste Buds

Tasmania’s famous Leatherwood Honey has always been a local treasure — and now a new study shows it’s not just delicious, but naturally packed with goodness that could help support better health.

Grown deep in the wild forests of Tasmania’s West and South, leatherwood trees (Eucryphia lucida) are found nowhere else on Earth. It’s from these flowers that bees make Leatherwood Honey, giving it a one-of-a-kind floral taste that visitors love to discover when they visit Tasmania.

A team at the University of Sunshine Coast Honey Lab has spent a year looking closely at what makes Leatherwood Honey so special. They found 14 natural compounds that make up its “chemical fingerprint”. One compound, called 4-Methoxymandelic Acid (4-MMA), has never been found in any other honey before — making it truly unique to Tasmania’s Leatherwood.

“This is wonderful news for our beekeepers and for everyone who enjoys Leatherwood Honey,” says Lindsay Bourke, President of the Tasmanian Beekeepers Association. “It shows what a gift our clean forests and hardworking bees give us — pure honey that’s not only tasty, but naturally good for you.”

What the Study Shows:

• Full of Natural Goodness: Leatherwood Honey contains plant-based compounds that may help fight inflammation, bacteria, and stress in the body.

• Unique Tasmanian Marker: 4-MMA proves your honey is genuine Tasmanian Leatherwood.

• Extra Health Benefits: Other natural parts of Leatherwood Honey may help protect the heart, bones, and brain, and even support healthy skin and weight.

This discovery means Leatherwood Honey can proudly stand alongside the best honeys in the world — as a delicious Tasmanian treat with real health benefits.
