North Sydney Council kicks off Pride Month with colourful Pride Picnic – more exciting events to follow

North Sydney Council 2 mins read

North Sydney Council proudly launched Pride Month with a vibrant Pride Picnic at Ted Mack Civic Park on Sunday 1 June, bringing together families, friends and community members for an afternoon of music, performances and fun.

The Pride Picnic, celebrating this year’s theme of “Love, Respect, Empower”, featured live music, drag shows, kid-friendly activities, food trucks and a rainbow dog competition. As dusk fell, attendees enjoyed a moving tribute to North Sydney’s queer history with projections of stories from the Mapping Queer North Sydney project illuminated on Stanton Library’s walls.

The celebrations don’t stop there, with North Sydney Council hosting a full calendar of events throughout June to honour Pride Month and promote inclusivity across the community.

Join the fun at these upcoming Pride Month events at Stanton Library:

Pride Storytime, Friday 6 June, 11am to 12pm
A joyful Storytime for children aged 3 to 5 and their families - featuring songs, stories, and crafts celebrating identity and rainbow families.

Poets @ Stanton for Pride Month, Thursday 12 June, 6pm to 7pm
Enjoy a wonderful literary evening with acclaimed queer poets Anne-Marie Te Whiu and Hasib Hourani in-conversation. Hear both poets share how they express identity, displacement, resilience and connection through their poetry.

Family Pride Party, Tuesday 24 June, 6pm to 7pm
An evening of sparkly stories, dancing, and colourful dress-ups for families with children of all ages.

Throughout June, the Council Chambers and Stanton Library will shine in rainbow colours as a vibrant symbol of support and solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community.

North Sydney Mayor Zoë Baker said: "The Pride Picnic was a joyful start to a month of events that celebrate diversity, identity and community spirit. We invite everyone to join us throughout June as we continue to honour the stories and contributions of our LGBTQIA+ neighbours, family and friends."
