Rewiring Australia backs mandatory solar on new builds

Rewiring Australia < 1 min read

Rewiring Australia has backed the Committee for Sydney’s call for mandatory solar panels on all new buildings to help turn the city into a Renewable Energy Zone.

In a report released today, the think-tank found that up to 75 per cent of metropolitan Sydney's annual energy needs could be met if every rooftop had solar panels.

“Rooftop solar is the cheapest delivered source of energy in Australia’s history,” said Rewiring Australia CEO Francis Vierboom.

“The solution to low-cost, clean energy lies on the rooftops of our homes and neighbourhoods. Mandating solar for new builds is a no-brainer.

“Our cities should be powered by rooftop solar and community batteries that let every household participate, whether they have a roof or not.

“We strongly support the idea of Sydney as a Renewable Energy Zone along with the emerging Illawarra Urban Renewable Energy Zone.”

In order for renewable energy zones to realise their full potential, Rewiring Australia is calling for urgent updates to outdated electricity market rules which are not fit for purpose.

“The electricity market was designed for an era of coal-fired power, not for the rooftops of everyday Australians. It's time to rewrite the rules to empower households and communities to lead our renewable energy future.

“This must include updating pricing and tariffs so households and communities are paid fairly for supplying clean energy back to the grid.”

Gas decision leaves Aussies exposed to more price hikes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEFRIDAY 20 MARCH, 2026 TheAlbanese Government has just approved a new gas export project, leaving Australians highly exposed to volatile international markets and rising costs of living. The project is approved until 2081 – more than three decades after Australia plans to finish its switch to clean energy – and brings the Albanese Government’s tally of new climate-polluting projects to 36 coal, oil and gas projects approved since 2022. Climate Councillor Greg Bourne said: “Digging up and exporting more gas directly exposes Australians to price hikes driven by global conflict, as we're seeing play out right now. Since…

‘No more war profits for Big Gas’: Greenpeace backs Government signal on taxing gas corporations

Greenpeace Australia Pacific has welcomed reports that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s department is considering options to tax the profits gas companies are making from the war in the Middle East, praising the move as strong leadership in a time of war, climate disruption and a cost‑of‑living crisis. DavidRitter, Chief Executive Officer at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said:“The Albanese Government deserves due credit for standing up to gas corporations like Woodside and Santos as Australia faces a cost-of-living crisis, created by dependence on fossil fuels like gas. “For years, rent-seeking gas companies have used every geopolitical shock as an excuse to demand…
