TAFE investment a solid building block to rebuild vocational education

NSW < 1 mins read

The NSW Government’s $325 million Budget commitment to rebuild the TAFE workforce is a strong investment to give NSW the skills base it needs to confront looming challenges such as the housing crisis and the energy transition, the NSW Teachers Federation said today.

The investment will convert TAFE teachers and staff to permanent positions. It will help repair the damage caused by the discredited former ‘smart and skilled’ policy that deregulated vocational education and ushered in mass casualisation of the workforce.

“To have a flourishing vocational education system, you need a stable workforce of teachers which is why this is such a crucial commitment from the NSW Government,” NSW Teachers Federation President Henry Rajendra said.

The Budget also commits to supporting more than 23,000 new apprentices and 4,800 existing workers to enter the construction workforce over the next two years.

“Investing in skills delivers a powerful return for the people of NSW,” Rajendra said. “It deepens our pool of talent while allowing people to shape their future and embark on new career paths.

“We commend the NSW Government’s commitment, which builds on the 3,000 TAFE teachers who have already been made permanent.”

New bill protects workers from AI excesses

Passage of the Work Health and Safety Amendment (Digital Work Systems) Bill 2025 through the NSW Parliament will curb unsafe, AI-driven work practices, rostering and invasive workplace surveillance, representing a landmark victory for workers. "This is a breakthrough for hundreds of thousands of workers," said Mark Morey, Secretary of Unions NSW. "By explicitly holding employers responsible when AI and digital systems harm workers, NSW is setting a proper standard for workplace safety in the digital age.” The legislation addresses critical gaps identified in parliamentary inquiries regarding work intensification and the psychological risks of automated decision-making. Under the new laws, employers…

‘Drama must end’ – Gupta must take deal to save Tahmoor

The Miners’ Union is calling on Sanjeev Gupta to take a serious offer for Tahmoor Colliery that would allow the mine to restart soon, with its existing workforce. Alternatively, creditors must insist that the mine is put into liquidation, to force a quick sale, said Mining and Energy Union South West District President Bob Timbs. The Australian newspaper reported today that scandal-plagued Gupta has rejected a $350 million bid from mining contractor RStar to buy the mine. RStar is a major contractor to Tahmoor mine and the employer of 250 workers who are currently stood down without pay while the…
