ASU welcomes historic Fair Work Ombudsman inquiry into disability sector

Australian Services Union < 1 mins read

Statement from ASU spokesperson Angus McFarland following the Fair Work Ombudsman's announcement of an inquiry into compliance with workplace laws in the disability support services sector.

"The Australian Services Union, as Australia's largest union for workers in the NDIS, welcomes this historic Fair Work Ombudsman Inquiry into the disability sector.

"We stand with underpaid NDIS workers every day. It often feels like a “whack-a-mole” exercise with underpayments popping up all over the place in this rapidly growing sector. So we welcome the resources of the Fair Work Ombudsman being deployed to investigate exploitation in the disability sector.

"People with disability deserve nothing less than knowing that every dollar of their NDIS package is being appropriately spent and that their support workers are paid properly for the work they do. We need to build a strong and sustainable NDIS where support workers are valued, trained and well remunerated. This inquiry will assist in helping the NDIS reach its potential and promise to the broader community."

UTS staff deliver overwhelming 95% vote of no confidence in Vice-Chancellor Andrew Parfitt

Staff at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have voted overwhelmingly to declare they have no confidence in Vice-Chancellor Andrew Parfitt, with 95% of voters supporting the motion. In this historic vote, open to all UTS staff members, more than 1500 UTS staff participated. The extraordinary rebuke follows months of key failures of the VC’s leadership team and the ‘Operational Sustainability Initiative’, which has proposed cutting hundreds of jobs and suspending enrolments in over 120 courses. The results of the ballot, conducted on behalf of UTS staff by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), were formally announced at a UTS…
