His Holiness the Dalai Lama turns 90 years old this Sunday, 6th July 2025.
Australia Tibet Council represents Tibet supporters across Australia, and we join Tibet supporters around the globe in honouring the Dalai Lama’s lifetime legacy of peace by making this global pledge.
For millions of people around the world, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is more than a spiritual leader. He is a symbol of hope, resilience and compassion whose life has been a testament to the power of nonviolence in the face of adversity, and his teachings have touched hearts across continents, faiths and generations.
At a time when the world often feels divided, His Holiness reminds us of our shared humanity and the potential for each of us to be a force for good.
On 6th July 2025, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will turn 90 years old, a profound milestone in a life dedicated to the service of others. Over the past nine decades, he has remained a tireless advocate for peace, nonviolence and the Tibetan people, while also becoming a global voice for universal human values.
As we mark this historic milestone, ninety years of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s extraordinary life, we do so not only with celebration, but with renewed responsibility.
On the occasion of the 90th Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we, Tibetans and Tibet supporters from Australia and across the world, pledge to carry forward his vision for Tibet and humanity, not merely in words—but through steadfast action, global solidarity and a lifelong commitment to truth and nonviolence. We pledge to;
- Defend and support the 14th Dalai Lama as the legitimate authority on his succession and affirm that the identification and appointment of Tibetan Buddhist leaders is to be decided solely by Tibetan Buddhist leaders, without any government interference
- Always uphold and embody compassion and nonviolence as a guiding principal in our work
- Continue to champion and defend the rights and dignity of the Tibetan people, and support efforts to preserve Tibetan language, culture, religion and identity
- Continue to advocate for the release of Tibetan political prisoners and to always champion the environmental protection of the Tibetan plateau
Australia Tibet Council, together with Tibet supporters globally, will honour the legacy of the 14th Dalai Lama and work tirelessly for a just, peaceful and free Tibet.

“Tibetans have been non-violently resisting the occupation of their land since the 1950s, and after more than seven decades, they have support for their non-violent struggle from people all over the world, including all over Australia,” says Dr Zoë Bedford, Executive Officer of Australia Tibet Council.
“The Australian Government should pressure China to return to the negotiating table with the Dalai Lama to resolve this conflict peacefully – by failing to raise this with the Chinese Government, they are failing one of the world’s greatest champions for peace.”
“The Chinese Government should accept the Dalai Lama’s offer of resolving the Sino-Tibet conflict via dialogue and peaceful means – they should negotiate with the Dalai Lama while they still have the opportunity,” says Mr Tenzin Lobsang Khangsar from Australia Tibet Council.
“But the Chinese Government is afraid, they are afraid of their abysmal human rights record in Tibet being exposed and they are afraid of having a genuine dialogue with Tibetan officials about how to create a peaceful future for Tibet.”
