Australian National Maritime Museum < 1 mins read

This National Science Week (9-17 August), join the Australian National Maritime Museum in a deep dive into the science of the ocean. Enjoy interactive events, special talks, exhibitions and experiments about ocean exploration and technology, underwater environments, the animals that inhabit them, and the ways in which we can protect and conserve our marine landscapes.

The Museum will host a range of activities both online and in-person for students of all ages, the community, and families, so that Science Week can be enjoyed by all.

At the Museum, students will be able to enjoy sails on Sydney Harbour where they will learn the practical applications of mathematics on a tallship, an engaging discussion with industry experts on the effects of plastic on our environment, and an inspiring speaker session, including some of Australia’s top ocean scientists and the Royal Australian Navy, about careers in STEM.

Visitors of all ages will be able to partake in hands-on demonstrations and activations, talks, and tactile opportunities to learn more about marine ecosystems and ecological sustainability efforts to reduce plastic in our oceans.

Schools will be able to enjoy several onsite and online excursions, including a number of virtual excursions for primary school students unpacking topics such as deep-sea engineering, the five ocean zones, shark science, and pollution. Onsite, students will be able to engage in activities which allow them to discover underwater ecosystems and food chains.

Head of Education, Dr Mathew Sloane has said, ‘STEM is crucial to help us explore, understand and conserve the oceans. Our interactive events, virtual excursions, special speaker sessions, sailing trips and workshops will inspire people of all ages in the world of ocean science.’
