MEDIA EVENT ALERT
Monday 28 July 2025 is World Hepatitis Day
World Hepatitis Day is a World Health Organisation (WHO) initiative to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer.
Hepatitis Australia coordinates the national World Hepatitis Day campaign each year, with each State and Territory Community Hepatitis Organisation taking part.
Hepatitis Australia invites media to attend and cover events marking World Hepatitis Day 2025 on and around Monday 28 July, as community organisations, and healthcare professionals unite to raise awareness and call for urgent action to eliminate viral hepatitis in Australia.
Chronic hepatitis B and C silently cause liver damage and cancer – despite them being preventable, treatable, and, in the case of hepatitis C, curable.
The campaign is a reminder that we must leave no one behind as we act now to expand access, integrate care, and end hepatitis as a public health problem by 2030.
National highlights include:
- Official World Hepatitis Day Parliamentary Event – Hepatitis Australia will release national figures and policy priorities, calling on governments to accelerate progress toward elimination by 2030.
- Liver Health Clinics and Testing Events – Free liver health checks, fibroscans, and hepatitis B and C testing clinics will take place in community settings across Australia.
- Voices for Elimination – Peer workers, clinicians, and people with lived experience available for interview in many languages.
- Landmarks Lit in Green – Iconic buildings around the country, including SA Parliament House and Hobart’s Tasman Bridge will light up green to increase awareness of the need to get tested.
