Irish SportsTech Startups Make Strategic Play in Australia Amid Lions Tour

Enterprise Ireland 3 mins read

Enterprise Ireland Delegation Showcases Latest Innovations for elite performance, fan engagement, facilities management, and streaming

Enterprise Ireland, Europe’s most active SportsTech VC investor and the trade agency of the Irish Government, has brought a delegation of Ireland’s leading SportsTech startups to Australia this week, showcasing next-generation technology in performance, fan engagement, facility management and streaming for Australian sporting codes, venues, and teams.

Ireland has emerged as Europe’s sports tech powerhouse. According to global market research leader PitchBook, Enterprise Ireland is now the top European VC investor in SportsTech by deal count, with 19 deals closed since 2024, far exceeding the two firms tied for second at six deals each. Ireland has maintained a top-four position every year for the past decade for SportsTech VC activity.

So far in 2025, Irish SportsTech companies have secured €6.84 million across five deals from Enterprise Ireland, with 2024 deal activity totalling €25.62 million across 25 deals. Unlike many other sectors, SportsTech in Ireland has defied global VC downturns, posting three consecutive years of growth from 2022 to 2024.

“SportsTech is rapidly turning into a cornerstone of Ireland’s innovation exports,” explains Libby Ryan, SportsTech Market Executive, Enterprise Ireland Australia, and New Zealand.

“Irish SportsTech companies are not just scaling globally; they’re shaping the future of sport. This visit is about forging local partnerships and showcasing technology that enhances every layer of the sporting ecosystem, from elite player performance to grassroots access and fan experience. With the Lions Tour as a backdrop, there’s no better time to connect Irish innovation with Australia’s world-class sporting landscape,” she adds.

An Elite Line-up of SportsTech Innovators

Coinciding with the highly anticipated British & Irish Lions Tour, Enterprise Ireland’s delegation reflects the breadth and depth of Irish innovation, both on and off the pitch, including:

  • Field of Vision, whose technology is now live at Telstra’s Marvel Stadium, enables visually impaired fans to follow play via AI-driven ball tracking and handheld devices.

  • MoveAhead is bringing fun, gamified movement learning to over 1 million Australian kids through mobile devices, with more than 5,000 hours of active screen time logged.

  • Hexis, which works with several Australian sporting codes, delivers personalised nutritional fuel plans for elite athletes that adapt in real time to immediate training and play demands.

  • KineMo transforms any mobile phone into a full-body 3D biomechanics lab, enabling scalable movement analysis for athletes, coaches, and physios.

  • Danu offers wearable gait and performance analytics that replicate lab-grade precision in the real world and are currently being used in University of Queensland research focused on long-distance and trail runners.

  • Output Sports, used by teams in the NFL, MLB, NHL, Six Nations, and over half the Premier League, simplifies athlete testing, programming, and velocity-based training (VBT) into a single sensor-driven platform.

  • SportsKey helps facility managers regain control and time through an intuitive scheduling system for sports venues used in hundreds of locations globally.

  • Wiistream powers white-label streaming and OTT platforms for global sports, offering secure, cloud-based delivery with full monetisation support.

  • Skippio enhances the fan experience through an express pre-order app for food and drinks, minimising queues and missed moments at live events.

  • ClubSpot supports grassroots and elite clubs with all-in-one management software to manage and grow operations and membership while ensuring compliance.

“Our SportsTech companies are here to create real-world partnerships across elite performance, fan engagement, facility management, and streaming,” notes Ms. Ryan. “We have been delighted with the interest from Australian clubs, venues, and youth development providers, with many of our technologies already in use or in pilots across the country.”

Trailblazing Research: University of Queensland and DANU Bring Biomechanics Out of the Lab and Into the Wild

In a world first, the University of Queensland (UQ), using technology from Irish SportsTech company DANU Sports, has launched a pioneering research trial to transform a Brisbane mountain trail into a living biomechanics laboratory, bringing scientific-grade analysis to the real-world environment of trail running. This groundbreaking project created by UQ Research Fellow Dr. Raimundo Sanchez is studying gait transitions, the precise moments when trail runners switch between walking and running. The research will contrast lab-derived metrics with those obtained on real terrain. This is only possible because Dr. Sanchez undertook another global first recently by standardising 1 km of running…
