Media Alert: Locked out Helensburgh miners to rally at Metropolitan mine

Mining and Energy Union < 1 mins read

When: Tuesday, 8 July, 8am

Where: Mine entrance on corner of Parkes Street and Camp Gully Road, Helensburgh NSW

Locked out Helensburgh miners will be rallying tomorrow at Metropolitan mine in protest of mine owner Peabody’s attempt to remove their long-standing job security clause, which prevents permanent jobs being replaced by labour hire contractors.

The miners were locked out without pay on 18 June in retaliation for taking a single one hour stop work, and for work bans placed on moving heavy equipment as well as training.

Peabody’s attempt to intimidation of MEU members for exercising their industrial rights is the latest in a growing trend of employers abusing disproportionate lockouts to punish workers under the current bargaining laws.

The locked-out miners will be joined by supporters from other unions and the local community, including the South Coast Labour Council.
