Momentum Now: A story of history, hope and evolution

Monash University 2 mins read

Monash is, and always has been, at the forefront of change and innovation.

Momentum Now is an evolution of how Monash tells its story, its history, and its purpose – building on the stories told throughout the Change It brand platform.

Since opening in 1958, Monash has established itself consistently among the world's most prestigious tertiary institutions – most recently rising to equal 36th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026.

In the past year alone, Monash’s accomplishments have included:

  • The opening of the Monash University Alfred campus to integrate world-leading research, education and clinical services to achieve better health outcomes.

  • The establishment of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – the first of its kind in the world.

  • Committing to a $60 million investment to build The Monash AdVanced Environment for Research and Intelligent Computing (MAVERIC), an advanced AI supercomputer which will boost Australia’s research capability.

  • Launching EMERGE @ Monash, a research talent recruitment scheme designed to attract outstanding early and mid-career researchers.

  • Leading the Artificial Heart Frontiers Program to develop a suite of next-generation devices to support all heart failure patients.

  • Securing $11.4 million in 2025 Laureate Fellowships for future-shaping research on AI, work disability systems and carbon-negative concrete.

Momentum Now is the story of Monash’s claim to a remarkable history, the incredible capacity and momentum the University has now to look into the future and continue creating the change the world needs.

Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Sharon Pickering, said Momentum Now represents how the University’s purpose, history and achievements are  shaping the future they want to create.

Momentum Now is a story of hope – a demonstration of the positive impact of Monash through history – and signals our focused intention to move forward at pace and scale. Momentum Now is about inspiration and creating new opportunities for making positive change. It is an urgent reminder that the work we do now, and into the future can prevent, repair, and reform,” Professor Pickering said.

“Ours is a proud story of collective drive and achievement in transformative education, research and collaboration that is shared by all of us at Monash. It is a story we invite others to be part of as together we lead the way forward to a future we can all be proud of.”

Chief Marketing, Admissions and Communications Officer and Vice-President, Fabian Marrone, said that Momentum Now lays the foundation for the future stories of Monash University to be told.

Momentum Now shows how we have catalysed change through our research, education and collaborations, and underscores the point that every second marks change with the momentum we have now,” Mr Marrone said.

“This story brings to life our founding purpose, states our ambition, claims our impact, and articulates the strength and scale of our international network of campuses. Most of all, this story emphasises why people want to collaborate with us – because we make change.”
