Night of Nights for the WA Baking Industry

Rich history of Western Australian Baking was honoured through two major awards being presented.

The AG (Tony) Noonan award for Apprentice of the Year and new to this year, the Karel van Styn Baking Excellence Award.

The inaugural recipient of this excellence award was David Palmer of Miami Bakehouse, for his contribution to the WA Baking Industry over the past 20 years.


The stars of Western Australia’s baking scene swapped aprons for evening wear last Saturday night for the 2025 WA Baking Industry Awards, held at the Astral Ballroom in Perth. The gala dinner brought together the best in the business for a night of celebration with award envelopes opened and winners announced to a crowd of industry professionals, apprentices, and artisan bakers.

The WA Baking Industry Awards, run by the Baking Industry Employers Association WA (BIEAWA) are one of the state’s most prestigious events for the baking community, with entries from across the state.

On the night, the rich history of Western Australian Baking was honoured through two major awards being presented. The AG (Tony) Noonan award for Apprentice of the Year and new to this year, the Karel Van Styn Baking Excellence Award. Karel Van Styn is a legendary part of WA’s baking industry and has been the President of the Baking Industry Employers Association West Australia for almost 23 years.

The inaugural recipient of this excellence award was David Palmer of Miami Bakehouse, for his contribution to the WA Baking Industry over the past 20 years.

Karel Van Styn spoke of David Palmer’s contribution to the baking industry through his commitment to quality training.

“The future of the industry lies in the development and training of apprentices. David has done a fantastic job for so many years, delivering specialised training and driving innovation within the Miami team.

“Miami Bakehouse has produced outstanding bakers and pastrycooks who have gone on to build rewarding and interesting careers.”

David Palmer said that he was very surprised and humbled to receive this terrific acknowledgement from the industry.

“The WA Baking Industry competition is such a valuable opportunity for our team to further refine their skills. And of course, the ultimate winners are our customers, who get to enjoy the results of their artisan work.

“We’re tremendously proud of our team and love what we do.”

 

The Miami Bakehouse Team proudly collected multiple awards across a range of baking categories including cakes, bread and savoury products. Miami was awarded three golds, for Traditional Anzac Biscuits, Apple Slice, Chicken Curry Pies and their final year Apprentice, Jacob Gates won gold for his Vienna Loaf bread entry.

With over 1,100 industry awards to their name, Miami Bakehouse continues to lead the way in handcrafted baking, combining traditional methods with modern recipes and artisan techniques, mentoring the next generation of WA bakers.
