PAYMAN REASSURES ENGLISH IMMIGRANTS: “Don’t let the anti-immigration rallies scare you.”

Senator Fatima Payman < 1 mins read

Western Australia’s only independent senator, Fatima Payman, is reaching out to Australia’s enormous number of English-born immigrants, as anti-immigration protesters take to the streets of Perth and other Australian cities.

It’s an attempt, by the Senator, to reassure them that they are welcome in this country, and that they shouldn’t be afraid.

“Almost a million Australians, or 3.6 per cent, were born in England, and they mustn’t be forgotten on this sad day, when intimidation and hatred are being openly displayed in our communities,” Senator Payman said.

“Immigrants play an enormous part in our national economic well being, and our cultural richness,” she said.

“Don’t let the anti-immigration rallies scare you.”

Senator Payman is pointing out, however, that citizens have the right to peacefully protest.

“I might disagree strongly with these people, but in our country they have the right to air their grievances and to do that in a peaceful way,” Senator Payman said.

“I’ve lived with displays of hatred all of my life, but I’m undaunted and unafraid, and I encourage all English-born Australians to adopt the same approach.”

“Don’t give them the satisfaction of triggering any response,” she said.

“And you have the support of all the other wonderful diverse Australian communities that bless us and who are also troubled today by these nasty people.”

Senator Payman is available for interview in or from Perth today.

Employment services are failing and need radical overhaul: ACOSS

Employment services are failing on all fronts and need comprehensive reform, ACOSS said today following the release of a further damning report by the Commonwealth Ombudsman on the Targeted Compliance Framework. The report found that private employment service providers are making large-scale errors in recommending people be eligible for harsh financial penalties, with over half of those recommendations later overturned. The Ombudsman also found providers are not meeting requirements to record proper information about a person’s full circumstances, leading to wrongful cancellation and suspension decisions. “This report demonstrates widespread harmful action against low income people and complete lack of oversight…

We need permanent solutions to energy affordability, not just band-aids

We need permanent solutions to energy affordability, not just band-aids Rewiring Australia says the federal government must make long term investments to slash bills, rather than relying on temporary relief such as the now axed energy rebates. “This rebate was always a short term bandaid. It softens bills for a year, then disappears, while households are still stuck with gas and inefficient appliances that keep costs high. If the government wants real cost of living relief, it should fund an Electrify Everything Loans Scheme for low income homes and their landlords so they can install solar, batteries and efficient electric…
