Premier Minns must back his words with action and reject dangerous gun bill in full

Alannah & Madeline Foundation 2 mins read

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation welcomes Premier Chris Minns’ assurance that NSW gun laws will not be watered down, along with his commitment to meet with Walter Mikac AM.

With the Hunting Bill being reviewed by parliamentary committee this week, Premier Minns can quickly act on this assurance by unequivocally rejecting the Hunting Bill in its entirety. Anything less would be pandering to the gun lobby and a grave betrayal of public safety.

“Nothing in the Bill warrants the government’s support. There is no public interest. It is not about conservation. It is not about environmental protection. It is a blatant push by vested interests and will unwind the bipartisan legacy of the National Firearms Agreement.” said Mr Mikac.

The bill poses a serious threat to public safety with alarming provisions such as:

  • The establishment of a Conservation Hunting Authority, controlled by hunting organisations and the gun lobby.
  • Enshrining a “right to hunt” in direct contradiction to the National Firearms Agreement and NSW’s own Firearms Act.
  • The creation of a Minister for Hunting and Fishing, effectively a government advocate for the commercial shooting industry.
  • Opening Crown land, forests and public hand to hunting, overriding current land management plans and consultation processes

These dangerous changes mirror the failed 2020 Hunting Bill and represent the most regressive gun policy since the Port Arthur tragedy.

Walter Mikac, who lost his wife and daughters in Port Arthur, said:

“This Bill is a Trojan horse for the gun lobby. The government should be protecting public safety, not trading it away.”

Premier Minns must not allow the integrity of NSW’s firearm laws to be compromised by political horse-trading. The NSW minority government should not be manipulated by the gun lobby seeking to undermine public policy and public safety.

We welcome the opportunity to meet with the Premier and expect him to follow through on his statement by making it clear, in public and in Parliament, that this Bill will be rejected outright.

The people of NSW deserve leadership, not concessions. Their safety is not up for negotiation.

About us:

About the Alannah & Madeline Foundation
The Alannah & Madeline Foundation was founded 28 years ago by Walter Mikac AM, and a small group of volunteers in memory of Walter’s young daughters Alannah and Madeline, aged just six and three, who tragically lost their lives along with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur in Tasmania on 28 April 1996. The Foundation was established with the belief that “all children and young people should be able to live a happy and safe life, free from violence and trauma.” Our mission continues today through our Care, Prevention and Advocacy programs – we fight for their right to be safe, so their future is strong.  www.alannahandmadeline.org.au

Commissioners call on government to support efforts to bring back Australian women and children from Syria

The Australian Human Rights Commission’s President and Commissioners for children and women’s rights have called on the Australian Government to support efforts to enable 34 Australian women and children held in the al-Roj camp in Syria to return to Australia. The Australian women were previously linked to the Islamic State terrorist group. While they have been issued Australian passports, the 34 women and children are being denied support from the government to return to Australia from the camp in northeast Syria where they have been held for the last 7 years. This is despite the successful repatriation of other Australian…

Dicing with death: survey reveals 40 per cent of young workers get no safety training

A new survey of young workers reveals almost four in ten respondents (39.8%) received no safety training when they started a new job while more than half (50.2%) never had their work health and safety (WHS) rights explained to them. Unions NSW, which conducted the survey, said it revealed a dangerously lax attitude to safety among employers. “Parents, employers, and policymakers should be concerned. But most importantly, young workers need to hear this message: if your boss is not giving you safety training or explaining your rights, they are dicing with death,” said Unions NSW Campaigns Officer, Caitlin Marlor. “We…

Dartbrook coal mine extension short sighted, reckless

In response to the NSW government’s approval of the extension of the Dartbrook thermal coal mine in the Hunter Valley, the Australian Conservation Foundation’s national climate policy adviser Annika Reynolds (they/them) said: “The decision of the Minns government to allow the Dartbrook thermal coal mine to keep mining coal until 2033 is reckless and short sighted. “In 2025, Dartbrook coal mine entered voluntary administration after accruing close to $50 million in losses, raising concerns about the mine’s capacity to pay its workforce, pay its taxes and royalties, or set aside sufficient funds to meet its rehabilitation obligations. “The Minns government…
