During a week of uncertainty the Melbourne Demons are committed to showing up for Australians affected by breast cancer.

On Sunday August 10, the Melbourne Football Club will host the annual Pink Lady Match against the Western Bulldogs at 3.15pm at the MCG.

Before the first bounce, thousands will stand in the Pink Lady Bays, holding pink silhouettes representing more than 21,000 Australians newly diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

Melbourne players will warm-up in T-shirts featuring the names of people affected by breast cancer including those living with incuraINble breast cancer, and those who have lost their lives to the disease.

Melbourne’s principal sponsor Zurich has donated its logo space on the jumpers to make this tribute possible.

Captain Max Gawn will be playing for his aunt Kylie, others will be playing for someone they are yet to meet but will no doubt be inspired by.

Every player has received a personal letter from the person or family of those names they carry — a reminder that every name represents a story. Each participant or their family has a matching warm-up tee and will form a guard of honour as the team run on to the ground in a moving tribute to life, loss and community.

Among them will be the Portet children whose mum Rina died last year. Her husband Tom Portet said they’re thrilled to have Ed Langdon wear her name on his 200th game. “The spirit Rina showed in her fighting metastatic breast cancer never leaves us. Rina would love this so much, especially for the joy it will bring her kids - knowing how much they love footy, the MCG, and the Dees. We are so proud to see her name on Ed’s jersey, we’re certain that if he had known Rina, he would feel equally honoured too.”

The match also marks the 21st year of partnership between the Melbourne Football Club and Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

“This partnership has always been about standing together for the long haul,” said Kirsten Pilatti, CEO of BCNA. “This match unites the entire football community "from the elite teams in the AFL through to grassrootz community clubs who take the Dees lead to PLAY4BCNA because breast cancer touches every club.”

Supporters from all clubs are encouraged to get involved and buy a Virtual Pink Lady place at pinkladymatch.com.au , no matter where they live or who they barrack for. Every virtual place and every BCNA beanie or ticket to our Pink Lady Bays helps BCNA continue to ensure everyone diagnosed with breast cancer has access to the best care, treatment and support.
