$26 MILLION AVAILABLE AS GO FOGO ROUND 5 OPENS

NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) 2 mins read

Councils across NSW are encouraged to apply for funding to roll out or expand Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) services, cutting food waste and easing pressure on landfill.

Round 5 of the Go FOGO program is now open to help councils manage food waste and prepare for the mandatory shift to FOGO recycling for all households by July 2030.

NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Acting Executive Director of Programs & Innovation, Kathy Giunta said $26 million is available from the $50 million Go FOGO pool.

“Greater Sydney is on the brink of a landfill crisis and FOGO is one of the most effective ways to tackle it,” Ms Giunta said.

“Councils can apply for grants to provide kitchen caddies and liners, launch community education campaigns, improve contamination monitoring and run local compost giveaways.

“These are practical steps that allow households to recycle food scraps with confidence. Every new or expanded FOGO service frees up landfill space, drives down emissions, tackles climate change and produces compost to enrich our soils, farms and parks.

“For every tonne of FOGO waste diverted from landfill, we’re preventing 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide reaching our atmosphere.”

Since 2022, four Go FOGO rounds have awarded $23.9 million to 29 projects across 31 local government areas, delivering kerbside services to around 940,000 households.

Ms Giunta said the NSW Government is requiring all councils with a red lid waste service to provide a FOGO service to their residents by July 2030.

“This $50 million pool is supporting more councils to get new and upgraded services up and running quickly,” she added.

“Our goal is to make it easier for councils to set their communities up for long-term success.”

Applications for Round 5 are open until 4pm Thursday 18 November 2025. Councils are welcome to attend an online information session at 1pm on 16 October 2025.

Australian Government “falls short of the bold leadership it promised” at Pre-COP

Reacting to the inadequate Australian funding commitments at Pre-COP in the Pacific this week, Oxfam Australia’s Chief Executive, Jennifer Tierney said: “For Australian leaders to leave Pre-COP without a single substantial funding pledge is irresponsible, and falls short of the bold leadership it promised. “The projects announced this week do not represent new climate finance. Repackaging previously committed funding as new announcements is simply not good enough. What Pacific communities need is genuine additional finance that reflects the scale and urgency of the climate crisis they are dealing with- losing homes, livelihoods and lives as disasters worsen. “Australia spends ten…

Mount Pleasant workers need certainty after High Court decision

Workers at the Hunter Valley's Mount Pleasant coal mine have been reassured that operations are continuing as usual in the wake of yesterday's High Court decision, with mine approvals in place until the end of 2032, the Mining and Energy Union (MEU) said today. The MEU is focused on supporting workers at the site as the long-term future of the mine is determined. "The High Court decision is disappointing, but we remain hopeful that the long-term future of Mount Pleasant can still be secured," said MEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy President Robin Williams. "Meanwhile, steps have been taken to…
