Melbourne Electricians State These Simple Measures Can Prevent Copper Wire Theft

Approved Electrix 2 mins read
Key Facts:
  • Copper prices have fluctuated between $11 and $14 AUD per kg since COVID.

  • With prices varying, a 100-metre roll of 2.5 mm 2c + E TPS copper wire valued at $30 may be sold wholesale for nearly $220 to sole traders but bought as scrap for only $3.5 a kg.

  • Residential home builds and renovation sites are more likely to be targeted by copper wire thieves than commercial sites.

  • Local electrician Dean Barton has shared simple, cost-effective measures for Melbourne homeowners to help deter copper thieves.

With copper wire theft on the rise throughout Victoria, local Melbourne electrician Dean Barton shares simple security measures for prevention.

Local Electrician Expert Offers Security Advice

Dean Barton, founder and Managing Director of Approved Electrix in Melbourne, has introduced security measures for homeowners, citing the significant rise in copper wire theft across Melbourne suburbs.

Spurred by his own experiences, Dean and his team have shared some lesser-known, low-cost, and ‘sparkie-approved’ security measures that consumers can adopt to protect themselves at minimal cost.

Residential properties are at major risk of copper theft

Reports of copper wire theft from building sites have increased across Victoria.

Dean Barton explained that there is more copper theft occurring due to price surges and electrical renovation sites not being properly secured.

Residential sites, especially in regional and suburban areas, are more likely to be hit by copper wire theft than commercial properties, as they’re often less secure.

Copper wire theft is easy to prevent, Barton urged, and hopes the easy measures provided by him and his team can prevent more Melbourne homeowners from falling victim to opportunistic copper thieves.

New data reveals soaring prison costs across Australia: a convict country following the American model

Australia’s continued reliance on incarceration is costing taxpayers more each year, with new data showing the ‘revolving door’ back into prison is becoming further entrenched as governments double down on the American approach of building more expensive prisons while ignoring the evidence about what actually reduces crime. The Productivity Commission’s latest Report on Government Services, released late Tuesday, reveals that total net operating and capital costs for Australian prisons have skyrocketed to more than $7.3 billion, representing a 5% increase since 2021-22. At the same time, the proportion of people returning to prison within two years has climbed to a…
