MR RIVER NIGHT

Leading National Disability, Child Safety and Community Sector Advocate, Professional and Speaker

Co-founder at Developing Australian Communities

Public Officer at the National Disability Leadership Organisation

Mr Night is physically located in Brisbane this week and can travel interstate if needed.

Mr Night is an adult Living with Disability, a National Disability Sector Advocate, carer, father and outspoken supporter for reform and improvements in the Disability and NDIS sector with a 30+ year career working across Disability, Youth Justice, Guardianship, Child Safety, Education, TAFE, Aged Care, Forensics Disability and Mental Health sectors.

NDIS reported that the current number of active participants in the last quarter Q4 24/25 was 739 413. During the last reported quarter over 22 billion dollars in payments were made for services.

Allied health providers deliver therapeutic supports to participants and are one of the largest groups of registered providers.

As NDIS budgets and legislation are a major part of reform, following the Disability Royal Commission and NDIS review, we decided to look into Allied Health and innovation in the sector for sustainable options that help make funds go further, increase access and are evidence based.

“Many of the tens of thousands of participants and providers I talk to around Australia are fearful of cuts. There is an overwhelming push for more innovation, access and evidence-based approaches that are outside the box of standard face to face, session-based service options. Remote and virtual access can be far more sustainable and a better fit for many Australians, especially for some therapies”, said Mr River Night today, National Disability Sector Advocate and Cofounder of Developing Australian Communities.

Occupational Therapy Australia created a petition regarding changes and challenges for NDIS Participants stating that “therapy support rates for occupational therapists have been frozen for the seventh year in a row. At the same time, the NDIA has slashed travel funding by 50%. These changes will force therapists to cut services, withdraw from regional areas, or leave the NDIS entirely”.

"I want our sector to look at ways we can extend access and delivery formats that make funded services go further through innovation and I think I found a perfect example of that in in the data and research provided by XRHealth, said Mr River Night today, National Disability Sector Advocate and Cofounder of Developing Australian Communities.

"NDIS participants have long faced challenges in receiving consistent care. Our therapy platform removes the barriers of travel, waitlists, and geography — ensuring services are delivered seamlessly, when and where they’re needed most", said Martine McCash, Vice President of Services for XRHealth Au Pty Ltd.

“XRHealth is making therapy accessible from home without compromising on clinical quality.

“VR gives people the chance to build capacity and skills, manage pain, improve mobility, and regulate emotions — all from the safety and comfort of home.

“For many of our clients, virtual therapy isn’t a convenience, it’s the only way they can access consistent, evidence-based care.

“Access to quality allied health support shouldn't depend on where you live. Our platform breaks down barriers to care, especially for those in regional, remote, or hard-to-reach areas.

XRHealth’s programs have seen significant research and support for the use of VR based service access and programs with strong evidence based on

  • Over 1 million XR sessions competed
  • Over 50K clients

  • 93% Patient/client retention

“The future of evidence-based therapy is personalised, data-driven, and delivered anywhere. XRHealth is leading that transformation — combining immersive technology with clinical expertise to make high-quality care accessible from home”, said Eran Orr, CEO of XRHealth

“For people living with disability, immersive therapy isn’t a luxury, it’s a scalable, effective, and dignified way to access evidence-based care.

“We’re building technology that adapts to the individual by combining real-time data, gamified environments, and clinician insights to drive better engagement and outcomes.

We spoke to Robyn, an adult with a complex case history and a personal story of challenges accessing allied health services and searching for alternative ways to engage both remote and city based.

"People don't realise how challenging the process and experience is sometimes to even get to face-to-face appointments. Social isolation, anxiety, complex support needs and disability can result in face-to-face appointments being missed, as sometime just leaving home and getting to clinics is too much, said Robyn.

"Innovation and especially options like VR and remote access means immediate engagement that I can manage and immediate programs without the massive challenge of travel, attending, navigating the world and all that comes with support needs that require allied health services.
