Senator Payman ‘dismayed’ at Kwinana closure

Senator Fatima Payman < 1 min read

MEDIA STATEMENT

Western Australia’s only independent senator, Fatima Payman, says she is “dismayed” by Alcoa’s decision to close its Kwinana refinery.

“The Kwinana Alumina refinery has been a big part of WA’s economy and the culture of the southern suburbs since the 1960’s and its permanent loss will be felt heavily by the community," Senator Payman said.

“My thoughts today are with the hundreds of people who will lose their jobs, as well as their families.

“Foreign companies like Alcoa dig out the resources that belong to West Aussies and as part of this social compact they should be looking at ways to value-add rather than cost-cut, otherwise State and Federal governments should reconsider giving access to these minerals at all.”

The Senator will be exploring the urgent need for value adding, as well as general manufacturing diversification, at Senate Budget Estimates in Canberra next week.

Rising Oil Prices Fueling Small Business “Insolvency Wave” as Inflation Crushes Margins

Rising Oil Prices Fueling Small Business “Insolvency Wave” as Inflation Crushes Margins As global oil prices surge toward US$120 per barrel following renewed instability in the Middle East, a significant risk is emerging for Australian small businesses — one that may not yet be visible in official insolvency statistics. While the immediate headlines focus on petrol prices and inflation, the secondary effects of rising fuel costs are quietly placing enormous pressure on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Greg Bartels, Director at Halo Advisory, says the current environment could create the conditions for a sharp increase in business failures, particularly among…

Raising NDIS price caps pushes up prices without increasing availability

Raising NDIS price caps results in higher fees and does not increase service provision, new research by the e61 Institute has found. The research tracked prices and service hours in the weeks around 1 July 2025 when the NDIA lifted price caps for some services - including daily living assistance and behaviour supports - and decreased them for others such as physiotherapy and podiatry. The analysis, using data from NDIS plan manager Kismet, found that for every 1% increase to a price cap, providers hiked prices by 0.61% on average with no meaningful increase in the amount of services provided.…
