Treaties Committee to examine UK and Indonesia Defence Treaties at public hearings

House of Representatives 2 mins read

The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties will hold public hearings today for its inquiries into:

The Committee will investigate if the UK Defence Treaty deepens bilateral cooperation in defence and strategic industries, and if it reinforces shared commitments to global security and stability. The Committee will also explore how this agreement supports enhanced interoperability, joint training, and technology exchange between the UK and Australia.

The Indonesia Defence Treaty forms part of a broader Strategic Partnership between Australia and Indonesia, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations. Through this inquiry, the Committee will hear how this treaty will promote defence industrial collaboration, support Indonesia’s energy transition, and strengthen mutual efforts in sustainable development and regional peace.

Committee Chair, Ms Lisa Chesters MP, said, ‘Australia’s longstanding defence relationship with the United Kingdom is built on trust, shared values, and a history of cooperation. The committee will investigate if this agreement re-affirms our strategic partnership. The Committee is keen to hear how this treaty might strengthen our defence capabilities and contribute to regional and global stability.’

‘The Indonesia Defence Treaty offers a chance to deepen defence ties in support of both nations’ strategic goals. It sets the stage for more advanced joint operations, from maritime security to disaster response. Strengthening our bilateral relationship is key to a stable and peaceful region. The Committee looks forward to exploring the full scope of this agreement at the hearing.’

The Committee will hear evidence from the Department of Defence and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade at the public hearings.

Our Hearts Break for Bondi: A Call to Prayer, Peace and Unity Futures Church

A statement from Futures Church – Ashley Evans, Senior Global Pastor. What happened at Bondi Beach was evil. There’s no other word for it. Families gathered to celebrate Hanukkah. At one of Australia’s most iconic places. They were attacked simply for being Jewish. This is not who we are. Let me be direct. Antisemitism is evil. It has no place in Australia. No place in any community. No place in the human heart. Any hatred or violence toward the Jewish people—or any people—is an assault on the image of God in every person. Futures Church stands with the Jewish community.…
