Mental Health Support in Commuters’ Hands at Central Station
Wesley Mission, in partnership with Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland and Transport for NSW, will be creating connections and conversations for Mental Health Month at Australia’s busiest transport hub.
On Wednesday 15 October, from 7.30am to 9.00am, 30 volunteers will be stationed across Central Station’s Grand Concourse and new Metro Concourse, handing out resource packs on building resilience and good mental health to over 10,000 commuters.
Wesley Mission CEO, Rev Stu Cameron, says the initiative is about sharing a smile and hope to where it is needed most.
“Every day, thousands of people pass through Central Station and every one of them will be carrying a story we cannot see.
“We know that 1 in 5 will be struggling with their mental health today with 9 Australians tragically taking their life before midnight. Through our “10,000 conversations” partnership with Transport for NSW we know lives and livelihoods will be changed, and potentially some saved.”
By placing these resources directly into people’s hands and starting a conversation, we are saying: we see you, it is ok to ask for help when you need it and you are never alone.
Sydney Trains CEO Matt Longland says the station’s scale makes it a critical place to intervene.
“Central Station sees more people each day than any other transport hub in Australia, which makes it an ideal place to reach people right in the flow of their everyday lives. This activation gives us the opportunity to literally place connection and mental health support in commuters’ hands. A small gesture like receiving a Lifeline branded phone wallet could be the reminder someone needs to reach out or check in with a friend.”
NSW Minister for Mental Health, The Hon. Rose Jackson, says mental health support shouldn’t be hard to find.
“Every suicide is a tragedy and it impacts every part of our community. That’s why we’ve introduced our landmark Suicide Prevention Bill to make every part of government accountable for saving lives.
“We’re proud to invest more than $143 million in suicide prevention initiatives, making help easier to find, even in the rush of a morning commute.
“We’re supporting Lifeline with $14.4 million in funding this year. A simple Lifeline logo on their phone might seem small but it could be the one thing that reminds someone to choose connection when they feel alone and without hope.
