The General Assembly’s new elevated pub menu is smoking, with a Southeast Asian twist

Soda Communications 2 mins read

Elevated Australian pub classics grace the polished plates of South Wharf’s General Assembly, with a brand-new menu by Head Chef Jin Choi seasoned with subtle nods to Southeast Asian cuisine and the smoky Josper grill launching in time for the warmer weather.

From kimchi mayo-topped loaded hot chips and house made beef dim sims in chilli vinegar and soy, to pub staples like parmas and steak sangas, The General Assembly’s new menu melds nostalgic Australian dishes and playful Asian flavours.

The General Assembly’s Head Chef Jin Choi said the venue’s mission is to deliver the best gastro pub experience on the Yarra River, but with a unique twist.

“Our menu is mostly classic pub food, but I like to borrow from and honour my heritage by adding a bit of Korean flavour and inspiration to some dishes – from our potato cakes with chilli jam and cauliflower bites with a Korean chilli vegan mayo, to cured Hiramasa Kingfish with perilla leaf dressing,” Jin said.

“I also love the pan fried Snapper fillet, where I use Korean chilli powder to balance the flavours. I’ve tried many varieties of chilli flakes, but I find Korean chilli gives the best mix of flavour and heat – not too strong and totally tasty. “To top off those flavour bombs, we are lucky enough to have a Josper – a premium charcoal oven and grill that adds a distinctive smoky char to our meats and vegetables and really elevates our dishes to the next level.”

Chef Jin, who joined The General Assembly as Head Chef in 2022, has worked with some of Melbourne’s most respected chefs and establishments over the past decade, including Coda, Spice Temple, Cutler & Co. and most recently, Lollo at W Melbourne.

“I’ve always been passionate about growing and evolving as a chef. It’s a privilege to share my skills and experience with both the team and the customers at The General Assembly.”

Diners can wash down a delicious meal with the venue’s signature Victorian Beer Flight, highlighting both highly celebrated and unique and boutique brews from around the state.

Conveniently positioned just a short walk away from DFO, Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre and Polly Woodside, and easily accessible by public transport at Southern Cross Station and nearby tram stops, The General Assembly is in the heart of Melbourne’s tourism precinct and is the perfect spot to drop by while exploring the city.

Whether it’s a midweek work lunch or a meal with a view while holidaying in Melbourne’s CBD, The General Assembly’s new menu is the perfect taste of Australian pub gastronomy that leaves bellies full and tastebuds tingling.
