Willoughby honours volunteer pioneer Mrs Kay Tang

Willoughby City Council < 1 mins read

One of Willoughby’s longest-serving volunteers, Mrs Kay Tang, has retired at the age of 96 after 28 years of dedicated service at the MOSAIC Multicultural Centre.

Volunteering lies at the heart of community life in Willoughby, fostering connection, cultural understanding and resilience. Mrs Tang has exemplified these values throughout her decades of service.

Mayor Tanya Taylor described Mrs Tang’s contribution as truly inspirational.

“Kay’s story is one of resilience, generosity and passion. For nearly three decades, she has given her time and talents to enrich the lives of others, leaving an immeasurable legacy in our community,” Mayor Taylor said.

Since 1996, Mrs Tang has volunteered three days a week, teaching flower making, leading the Taiwanese Dance Group and Japanese Folk Dance, and bringing joy to generations of residents. Despite recent health challenges, she continued to attend MOSAIC on her mobility scooter and rarely missed a class.

Mrs Tang’s retirement coincides with the 32nd anniversary of the MOSAIC Centre – a fitting moment to celebrate her extraordinary contribution. Having joined in its early years, she has played a key role in shaping the Centre’s warm and inclusive spirit. To mark the occasion, Mayor Taylor will present Kay Tang with a certificate of recognition.

Her exceptional commitment has been recognised through multiple honours, including NSW Senior Volunteer of the Year (2021) and Willoughby City Council’s Volunteer of the Year Award (2017). Her determination and warmth have touched countless lives and will be remembered for years to come.
