Be the hope the Mackay community needs this year

Support the Salvos Fundraising to support those doing it tough

The Salvation Army in Mackay is calling on the community to donate this year’s Red Shield Appeal, raising local funds to support people who are struggling most in our region.

“The last few years have been incredibly tough for the hardest hit in our community, and for many that shows no sign of slowing down. With impacts of the rise in the cost of living, demand for services is growing and we need your help.  Government funding only goes so far but the need in our community puts pressure on our services.  This year we will be seeking your help to support the work we do catering for our most vulnerable. At the Salvos we are privileged to support those in our area experiencing hardship, but we cannot do this without the ongoing and loyal support of the community,” said Mackay Salvation Army’s David Dobbie.

The funds raised in Mackay for the Red Shield Appeal will stay in the local community and will be used to meet the specific needs faced by the most disadvantaged and vulnerable.

Across Australia last year, through The Salvation Army’s network of over 400 centres and 2,000 services in areas such as homelessness, family and domestic violence, youth, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, financial hardship and much more, the Salvos provided:

  • Assistance to one person every 17 seconds
  • More than 1.76 million sessions of care to over 250,000 people in need
  • Over 1.1 million bed nights to those who needed accommodation
  • More than 1.5 million meals to those who accessed our homelessness services.

To donate or volunteer for The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal or if you need support from the Salvos, visit salvationarmy.org.au or call 13 SALVOS. You can also donate at any Salvos Store.

Backing down from net zero puts people and communities at risk

The Liberal Party’s decision to abandon the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 puts people, communities and the environment at risk. This threat is most acute for people and communities experiencing disadvantage, who have least capacity to prepare, adapt and recover from extreme weather events, ACOSS says. “This withdrawal from the emissions commitment, as the global community is gathered at COP, shows indifference to our climate emergency and threatens further harm to people already experiencing the sharpest impacts of climate change,” ACOSS Acting CEO Edwina MacDonald said. “Communities experiencing disadvantage across Australia face escalating threats from intensifying natural disasters.…

Victorian homelessness body warns of irreparable damage without urgent housing investment

Council to Homeless Persons has issued an impassioned plea to the Victorian Government to continue its legacy of bold reforms by funding evidence-backed programs and solutions to the state’s worsening homelessness emergency. Victoria’s peak body for homelessness has used its 2026-27 budget submission to highlight the highest rates of homelessness in living memory, calling for urgent and strategic investments which could turn the tide for the state, which has the lowest share of social housing in the country. “The Victorian Government has a strong track record of bold reform. Our leaders have given us action on Treaty, voluntary assisted dying…
