South Australian parliamentarians, scientists, and ocean advocates will gather in Adelaide TOMORROW on Tuesday 25 November for a special parliamentary screening of OCEAN with David Attenborough, celebrating the significance of the Southern Ocean and the campaign to secure UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Nullarbor and Great Australian Bight.
The screening will be held TOMORROW at The Piccadilly, North Adelaide, Tuesday 25 Nov with doors opening at 6.00pm. Actor Simon Baker and Surfers for Climate co-founder and longboarder Belinda Baggs will MC the evening.
Hosted by Surfers for Climate, the Wilderness Society, and the Great Australian Bight Alliance, the event features an abridged screening of OCEAN followed by a panel discussion. The conversation will focus on how protecting the Southern Ocean supports biodiversity, healthy coastal communities, and regional industries.
Both Opposition Leader Vincent Tarzia and South Australian Environment Minister Lucy Hood will address the event, reflecting the cross-party recognition of the Bight’s environmental and cultural importance. The event aims to reinvigorate conversation across the political spectrum about long-term protection for the Southern Ocean.
The screening is timely, revisiting Labor’s past election commitment to World Heritage listing as the state heads toward another poll. It also follows South Australia’s recent algal bloom, which continues to underscore the need to protect the state’s fragile coastal and marine ecosystems from the growing impacts of climate change and pollution.
“This event is a reminder that protecting the Great Australian Bight is both an environmental and social priority,” said Surfers for Climate CEO Josh Kirkman. “The Bight’s future is crucial to South Australia’s coastal communities, wildlife, and climate resilience.”
