Democratic Mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani has won the New York Mayoral election race, becoming the first Muslim and South Asian candidate to govern the largest city in the United States of America. Dr Benjamin Moffitt can comment on Mamdani’s anti-establishment credentials, democratic socialism and why the New York race has attracted such significant national/global attention.

“Mamdani’s victory will have significant repercussions beyond New York City, and perhaps even beyond the US. Australian parties on the left should be taking note: this is how you run a campaign that relentlessly targets the issue of housing unaffordability and insecurity.

“Mamdani’s win also represents a potential new path forward for the Democratic Party at a time they seem rudderless in the face of Trump: democratic socialism. Expect Mamdani to take the baton from Bernie Sanders as the face of the Democratic left – and for Trump to turn his attacks straight towards him.”

Under-18s super carve-out sees Queensland teenagers miss out on $104 million in super contributions

The Super Members Council is pushing to scrap an outdated law that denies super to most under-18 workers, after new analysis shows it will shortchange teenagers in Queensland $104 million in 2025/26. The research shows 127,000 under-18 workers in QLD will miss out on an average of $820 in super contributions this year, and about 515,000 teen workers nationally will be excluded from a combined $405 million. Under current rules, workers under the age of 18 are only legally guaranteed super if they work more than 30 hours a week for one employer. The outdated exclusion was originally made to…
