RTBU welcomes the appointment of new Tasmanian Branch Secretary, Mark Dunsby

Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) 2 mins read

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) welcomes the appointment of Tasmanian Branch Secretary Mark Dunsby, effective from Sunday, 9 November 2025, following the resignation of its outgoing Secretary, Byron Cubit.

Mark brings more than 14 years of experience to the position, having served as a Springfield bus driver, delegate, and former Branch President.

After more than a decade behind the wheel, Mark claims he has driven every route in Hobart and has seen firsthand the daily pressures of the job, from fatigue and job uncertainty to outright abuse. These experiences have fuelled his fight to protect workers every day.

“I know how hard our members work to keep our community moving. They are out every day, whether it's rain, hail or shine, providing a critical service to Tasmanians. Every single one deserves to be treated with respect.

“This means more than just words – it means paying our transport workers better and providing practical solutions to keep them safe on the job at all times.

“I’ll make it my mission as Branch Secretary to make sure members get what they deserve,” Mark said.

RTBU Assistant National Secretary, Shayne Kummerfeld, thanked outgoing Branch Secretary Bryon Cubit, for his tireless commitment to improving the wages and conditions of rail and bus workers across Tasmania.

“Over the past two years we’ve witnessed a Liberal State Government hell bent on cutting workers' conditions, yet Byron stood shoulder to shoulder with members at every turn to make sure they were respected for the essential work they do.

“Through his leadership, Metro members secured a record 20.5% pay increase and lasting improvements to conditions, such as critical incident leave,” Shayne Kummerfeld said.

The Tasmanian Branch Executive appointed Mark Dunsby to the role on Tuesday, 5 November 2025, with John Groves now assuming the role of Branch President.

Tasmania’s proposed firearms changes ignore national calls for tighter gun control

The Tasmanian government has ignored community calls for stronger gun laws and bowed to the gun lobby’s demands, offering a premium price for restricted firearms and allowing an unlimited number of firearms for each gun owner. The Rockcliff government announced its position just hours after the first meeting of a committee purportedly established to consult on firearm laws. Australian Gun Safety Alliance convenor and Alannah & Madeline Foundation advocacy advisor Stephen Bendle said: “It is deeply disturbing that the Rockcliff government has chosen to ignore the National Cabinet recommendation of caps on the number of firearms anyone can own. “Tasmania…

Tasmanian gun reforms hang in the balance as committee meets for first time

Strengthening gun laws to keep Tasmanians safe will be on the agenda at the first meeting of the Firearms Consultative Committee today, with Tasmania still to commit to national gun reforms in the wake of the Bondi Beach tragedy. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is calling on the Rockliff government to ensure Tasmania takes reasonable steps that seek to prevent future gun deaths – instead of following Queensland by ignoring National Cabinet and the national sentiment. Australian Gun Safety Alliance convenor and Alannah & Madeline Foundation advocacy advisor Stephen Bendle, who has been appointed to the consultative committee, said: “This…

AWU SECURES HIGHEST PAID CIVIL CONSTRUCTION AGREEMENT IN AUSTRALIA FOR SUBURBAN RAIL LOOP TUNNELLERS

The Australian Workers' Union has today lodged a landmark tunnelling agreement for Package C of Victoria's Suburban Rail Loop, negotiated with CPB & Acciona. The agreement delivers the highest paid wages and conditions for civil construction workers anywhere in Australia and is a continuation of Victoria's proud tradition of first-class tunnelling agreements. AWU Victoria State Secretary Ronnie Hayden said the agreement set the benchmark for how major infrastructure projects should treat the workers who build them. "I am proud to have once again signed off on the highest paid civil construction agreement in the country. If this project is to…
