The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) welcomes the appointment of Tasmanian Branch Secretary Mark Dunsby, effective from Sunday, 9 November 2025, following the resignation of its outgoing Secretary, Byron Cubit.

Mark brings more than 14 years of experience to the position, having served as a Springfield bus driver, delegate, and former Branch President.

After more than a decade behind the wheel, Mark claims he has driven every route in Hobart and has seen firsthand the daily pressures of the job, from fatigue and job uncertainty to outright abuse. These experiences have fuelled his fight to protect workers every day.

“I know how hard our members work to keep our community moving. They are out every day, whether it's rain, hail or shine, providing a critical service to Tasmanians. Every single one deserves to be treated with respect.

“This means more than just words – it means paying our transport workers better and providing practical solutions to keep them safe on the job at all times.

“I’ll make it my mission as Branch Secretary to make sure members get what they deserve,” Mark said.

RTBU Assistant National Secretary, Shayne Kummerfeld, thanked outgoing Branch Secretary Bryon Cubit, for his tireless commitment to improving the wages and conditions of rail and bus workers across Tasmania.

“Over the past two years we’ve witnessed a Liberal State Government hell bent on cutting workers' conditions, yet Byron stood shoulder to shoulder with members at every turn to make sure they were respected for the essential work they do.

“Through his leadership, Metro members secured a record 20.5% pay increase and lasting improvements to conditions, such as critical incident leave,” Shayne Kummerfeld said.

The Tasmanian Branch Executive appointed Mark Dunsby to the role on Tuesday, 5 November 2025, with John Groves now assuming the role of Branch President.

MEU welcomes court decision confirming full rights of workplace delegates

The Mining and Energy Union has welcomed today’s Federal Court decision confirming that the Closing Loopholes laws give workplace delegates the right to represent workers on site regardless of labour hire or employment arrangements, delivering a significant win for workers and their unions across Australia. The decision follows a legal challenge brought by the MEU, with the support of the ACTU and its affiliates, after the Fair Work Commission inserted a delegates’ rights clause into modern awards that significantly limited the scope of the rights Parliament intended to provide. Under the Closing Loopholes legislation, workplace delegates were granted new statutory rights…
