The Hon. Bill Johnston appointed inaugural chair of McKell Institute Western Australia

The McKell Institute Western Australia 2 mins read

The McKell Institute Western Australia is proud to announce the appointment of The Hon. Bill Johnston, former West Australian State Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Energy and Industrial Relations as the inaugural Chair of its WA Advisory Committee. Mr. Johnston will also take a seat on the McKell National Board.

Mr. Johnston brings unparalleled executive and policy expertise to McKell WA. As a senior minister in the McGowan and Cook Labor Governments, Mr. Johnston was responsible for steering Western Australia’s pivot to renewable energy through record investments and grid transformation. He also introduced significant, impactful reforms that modernised and strengthened workers' rights across the State.

Mr. Johnston’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the McKell Institute as it builds its presence in The West, following the launch of McKell WA with Premier Roger Cook in August 2025. Further, Mr Johnston’s position on the National Board ensures the critical Western Australian perspective is represented at the highest level of strategic and policy discussions.

Quotes attributable to McKell WA Chair, The Hon. Bill Johnston

“I have long admired McKell’s ability to bridge the gap between policy research and practical implementation. Western Australia is in a crucial phase of economic diversification, particularly in mining, energy, and renewables. Statement on the arrest of 20-year-old man on terrorism charges

We’re at a beautiful intersection when Ramadan, Lent and Lunar New Year are being observed at the same time. I walked down Murray Street Mall just yesterday and the vibes were amazing. Sadly, this time of celebration has been dampened by the news of another white supremacist being arrested in Western Australia. I learned of this development through the media while attending prayers at my local mosque during Ramadan yesterday evening. I love WA, and I believe that this man isn’t representative of the place that I love and will soon raise my daughter in. Hope will overcome hate.Contact details:…

UPDATED (report link included) Warning signs of new consumer risks amid a concerning spike in super switches of Australians with very low super balances

New research has revealed an alarming spike in the number of Australians with very small super balances and no pre-existing advice relationship now being switched at scale out of the safe, high performing, tightly regulated super system into more expensive and potentially riskier super products. The new data should sound alarm bells about drivers of large-scale, higher-risk super switching where it makes Australians poorer. It highlights the need for stronger guardrails to protect Australians from financial harm. Released today by the Super Members Council, the new aggregated de-identified data shows recent switching activity from mainstream, high performing, tightly regulated funds…
