Christmas reminds us we are stronger together:

Wesley Mission’s Christmas message of connection

As the nation continues to reflect on the massacre of innocents at Bondi, Wesley Mission is calling on Australians to let Christmas, which falls a few days after Hannukah concludes, a season for unity, compassion and a renewed commitment to our shared humanity.

Wesley Mission CEO Rev Stu Cameron says this Christmas arrives at a fragile time, following growing social anxiety and the horrendous antisemitic violence at Bondi Beach on 14 December, which has deeply shaken the community.

“Moments of division remind us why Christmas matters.  This season, and the story at the heart of it, calls us to choose unity, compassion and shared humanity over fear and hate.

“Acts of hate and violence have no place in our society. Christmas invites us to stand together across faiths, cultures and backgrounds with dignity, grace and respect.”

Rev Cameron says the Christmas story offers a powerful reminder that connection, not isolation, lies at the heart of human flourishing, particularly at a time when many people feel increasingly alone, despite being more digitally connected than ever.

“The message of Christmas is simple: we are not meant to carry life on our own.  God is with us and for us. We are stronger when we stand together and what unites us as a community is far more powerful than anything that seeks to divide us.”

As part of its Christmas outreach, Wesley Mission will host a free Christmas Day lunch where everyone is welcome, offering a place of connection and belonging for people who might otherwise spend the day alone.

“Every year we open our doors on Christmas Day with magnificent food, friendly company and a warm, welcoming place for anyone who might otherwise be alone,” says Rev Cameron.

The lunch will feature a generous Christmas buffet, carols, games and conversation in a relaxed, cheerful setting designed to help people feel at home.

Rev Cameron says the event reflects the deeper spirit of Christmas of open doors, shared tables and communities looking out for one another.

“A more compassionate, connected Australia is not just possible, it is something, with God’s help, we can create together.”
