Animal Welfare League NSW launches urgent Christmas adoption drive

Animal Welfare League NSW (AWL NSW) has issued an urgent call for the community to open their hearts and homes this Christmas, with the organisation’s shelters now at full capacity ahead of the holiday period.

The A Home for the Holidays adoption drive will run until 5 January, offering reduced adoption fees to help more animals over the age of 7 months find loving homes. Adult dogs will be $99 and adult cats $49.

Acting CEO Mark Seymour said the situation is becoming critical, with 389 animals currently in care, 233 in the shelter and vet clinic, and 156 in foster homes.

“We are quite literally full,” Mr Seymour said. “We have only a handful of kennels left. As we head into Christmas, our foster carers often travel or have other commitments, which means animals in their care may need to return to our already stretched shelter.”

With a reduced list of available foster carers, AWL NSW is being forced to limit intake.

“We will always accept animals seized through Inspectorate action or animals needing urgent medical care,” Mr Seymour said.

“But right now, we cannot safely take in surrenders or branch transfers. We urgently need the community’s help to create space.”

Mr Seymour said adopting an animal is a powerful way to make a difference during the holiday season.

“Giving an animal a home for Christmas is an act of kindness that lasts a lifetime,” he said. “Every adoption means we can say yes to another animal in need.”

“We urge people to adopt, not buy a pet this Christmas.”

AWL NSW is encouraging families, singles and seniors to consider adopting or fostering during the A Home for the Holidays campaign.
