Australians for Mental Health welcomes mental health spend in mid-year budget update

Australians for Mental Health has welcomed the federal government’s decision to fund its election commitment of more than $1 billion for mental health care.

The Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook released today confirms the mental health funding boosts, which will expand services and provide a boost to the workforce.

The funding includes $500 million spent on a new network for 20 Youth Specialist Care Centres, $267.3 million for 32 new and upgraded Medicare Mental Health Centres, $225.3 million for 58 new, upgraded or expanded Headspace services and $83.9 million for additional training places for mental health professionals and peer workers.

“This is a significant injection which will help ease pressure on strained services across the country as we deal with a mental health crisis,” Australians for Mental Health Executive Director Chris Gambian said.

“Tackling this issue will require big commitments such as this. But we also know we can’t treat our way out of this crisis. Mental health is complex and influenced by so many factors, ranging from housing security, employment and community connections.

“By providing both adequate funding for services and expanding the workforce, and embedding wellbeing into all government decision making processes could significantly improve the lives of Australians. It’s a big and complex issue which requires additional solutions to those inside the healthcare sector,” Chris Gambian said.

Australians for Mental Health has been consistently calling on the government to take bold action, including:

  • Passing a Wellbeing Act to embed mental health and wellbeing issues in all policymaking;

  • Appointing a Minister for Mental Health & Wellbeing located in the Prime Minister’s department to drive a whole-of-government response to the mental health crisis;

  • Establishing an independent Mental Health & Wellbeing Commissioner to hold government to account for its performance on mental health.

Not-for-profit healthcare sector welcomes proposed private funding reform

Australia’s not-for-profit private healthcare sector has backed the government’s proposal for a new funding mechanism that puts private hospitals on a sustainable footing, removes complexity, and focuses on delivering quality care to patients. The Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA) has joined Catholic Health Australia (CHA) in supporting the Private National Efficient Price (PNEP) as a “nation-strengthening step”. CHA represents Australia’s largest non-government group of not-for-profit health, community and aged-care providers, while AHSA is Australia’s largest aggregated contract negotiator and purchasing group for not-for-profit private health funds. “For too long, we’ve had a system where private hospitals, especially not-for-profit providers, have…

eSafety raises concerns about misuse of Grok to generate sexualised content

eSafety remains concerned about the use of the generative AI system Grok on X to generate content that may sexualise or exploit people, particularly children. While the number of reports eSafety has received remains small, eSafety has seen a recent increase from almost none to several reports over the past couple of weeks relating to the use of Grok to generate sexualised or exploitative imagery. eSafety will use its powers, including removal notices, where appropriate and where material meets the relevant thresholds defined in the Online Safety Act. X, Grok, and a wide range of other services are also subject…

ZIONIST FEDERATION OF AUSTRALIA RESPONSE TO ROYAL COMMISSION ANNOUNCEMENT

8 January 2026 MEDIA RELEASE - For immediate release The Zionist Federation of Australia welcomes the Government’s decision to establish a Royal Commission into antisemitism and the 14 December Bondi terrorist attack, and acknowledges the breadth of the terms of reference. This decision reflects the clear and consistent calls of the Australian Jewish community, alongside a broad cross-section of Australian society, that the scale and severity of antisemitism confronting our country demands a serious national response. We welcome the opportunity this Royal Commission provides to examine how antisemitic hatred was able to grow and become normalised, and to ensure that…
