Back to Basics This Christmas – A Call for Kindness and Connection

Act for Kids 2 mins read

After a challenging year marked by cost-of-living pressures, social media age restrictions and global instability, Australian families are being encouraged to give the gift of kindness and connection this Christmas.

Leading child protection organisation Act for Kids says the festive season offers a timely opportunity to get back to basics and focus on what matters most.

A recent Act for Kids survey of 300 children aged 10 to 16 across Australia found an overwhelming three in four children (76 per cent) felt most connected to their family when doing something as simple as talking in person about their day.

Act for Kids CEO Dr Katrina Lines said that the school holidays were an ideal time for parents and carers to find meaningful ways to connect with and entertain children, both online and offline.

“With many children under 16 losing access to social media under new age restrictions, it’s important we look at other ways to engage and connect with kids,” Dr Lines said.

“Our research found that playing games is the most popular online activity for children, with 41 per cent saying it’s what they enjoy most. Yet only 29 per cent of families play games online together.

“Online gaming platforms have largely remained unaffected by the social media age restrictions, meaning there’s nothing stopping parents and carers from joining in. Better still, families could bring back simple traditions like board game nights.”

As cost-of-living pressures continue to affect households across the country, Dr Lines said the festive season was a timely reminder of what truly matters.

“Christmas is a time for goodwill and community. Families can make the season special by going back to basics and giving the gift of kindness and connection,” she said.

While the festive season can be a time of joy and celebration, it can also heighten feelings of loneliness and isolation for some.

53 International NGOs warn Israel’s recent registration measures will impede critical humanitarian action

International humanitarian organisations operating in the occupied Palestinian territory warn that Israel’s recent registration measures threaten to halt INGO operations at a time when civilians face acute and widespread humanitarian need, despite the ceasefire in Gaza. This triggers a 60-day period after which INGOs would be required to cease operations in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. INGOs are integral to the humanitarian response, working in partnership with the United Nations and Palestinian civil society organisations to deliver lifesaving assistance at scale. The…
