Commission condemns terrorist attack on Jewish community

The Australian Human Rights Commission today extends its condolences to the victims and loved ones of yesterday’s horrific antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on the first day of Hanukkah.

We are deeply saddened and horrified by the violent attack in Bondi during a Jewish celebration which resulted in the loss of at least 16 lives and left many others wounded and traumatised.

Violence motivated by hatred or extremism has no place in Australia. Antisemitism is abhorrent. It tears at the social fabric of our community. Antisemitism has been rising in Australia. Now it has manifested in mass murder.

We stand in solidarity with the families and loved ones of those who were killed, the injured, and with the Jewish community who are grieving in the wake of this atrocity.

An attack on people gathered in celebration of their faith and culture is an attack on the right to safety, dignity and freedom of all Australians.

We must address this profound hatred, prejudice and violence. We call for all Australians to stand together against terror, racism, hatred and division.

We acknowledge the community members and emergency services who acted with bravery, humanity and compassion during the incident and in the immediate aftermath.

We reaffirm our commitment to confronting antisemitism and all forms of racism in Australia so everyone can live in safety with dignity and respect regardless of their race, culture or faith.
