Dementia Australia celebrates Nic Tremaine’s extraordinary 47,000km ride for dementia awareness

Dementia Australia 2 mins read

Dementia Australia is preparing to celebrate cyclist Nic Tremaine as he approaches the finish line of Distance 4 Dementia - a solo, unsupported ride around Australia over 365 days.

On New Year’s Eve, Nic will roll into Sydney, completing an extraordinary effort inspired by his mum Marilyn’s dementia diagnosis and a dedication to raising awareness and vital funds for Dementia Australia.

Dementia Australia CEO Professor Tanya Buchanan said she is in awe of Nic who started his journey on 1 January 2025, setting out to ride the earth’s circumference and to spark conversations about dementia.

“Over the past 12 months, Nic has averaged 110 kilometres a day, camping most nights and relying on community goodwill, all in honour of his Mum,” Professor Buchanan said.

“Along the way, he has visited towns and country shows, spoken with local groups, and shared stories to encourage understanding and support.

“Nic’s determination and commitment is inspiring.

His ride has shone a spotlight on dementia, which is now the leading cause of death in Australia.

“Nic’s efforts remind us of the impact of dementia, not only on those who live with it, but on family members and carers, and why research, support and awareness is so critical.”

As he approaches the finish line, Nic said he is beyond proud to have raised more than $70,000, with donations continuing to be accepted via the Dementia Australia website.

“Dementia affects every person and family differently,” Nic said.

“I want families to know they’re not alone. We’re all in this together and we can support each other.”

Media are invited to capture Nic’s Sydney New Year’s Eve finish as he completes his final leg across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, rides through the Sydney CBD and crosses the finish line in Eastern Sydney at approximately 10:30am.
