NSW pesticide users are being urged to make sure they have the relevant licences and training ahead of a new compliance campaign kicking off in the northwest of the state.
As spray season kicks off this summer, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) will be checking if commercial pesticides applicators are licenced in Moree, Walgett, Narrabri, Brewarrina, Warren, Coonamble, Gilgandra, Gunnedah and surrounding areas.
NSW EPA Director of Operations Scott Kidd said the EPA had received tip-offs about an increasing number of unlicenced operators spraying pesticides and herbicides across the state.
“We know how important pesticides and herbicides are for crop yields and pest control, but these chemicals must be used safely and according to the label to prevent impacts on off-target plants and animals,” Mr Kidd said.
“Safe spraying isn’t just good news for the environment and your neighbours; it can also save you money and time by making sure these chemicals are only used for their intended purpose.
“If you’re using pesticides, you need to check if you require a licence or accredited training, including follow-up refresher courses every five years.
“If you’re hiring out for bigger jobs, you should only be paying an operator who is fully licensed and accredited to avoid the risk of damage.”
Licences can be checked on the NSW EPA Public Register, and all pesticide users and landholders are encouraged to ensure they are compliant before spraying this summer.
Other useful tips to prevent unwanted damage from pesticides include:
- Checking the product label and instructions carefully
- Complying with all directions for use on the label
- Keeping accurate records of each pesticide use
- Checking weather conditions before spraying
- Having appropriate training in the use and handling of pesticides and herbicides.
