SydWest Multicultural Services proudly joins communities across Australia and the globe in celebrating International Migrants Day – a day dedicated to recognising the invaluable contributions of migrants and the richness they bring to our society.
Migration has shaped Australia’s identity for generations. In Greater Western Sydney – one of the most culturally diverse regions in the country – this diversity shines brightly where 88% of residents speak a language other than English, in some suburbs.
Celebrating Success: Women & Family Programs
In the past year alone, SydWest delivered 11,424 sessions to 3,760 clients through our Women and Family programs, creating safe and empowering spaces for women and children to flourish. These programs include playgroups, women’s support groups, digital literacy training, and initiatives that strengthen family relationships and children’s development.
“Belonging is at the heart of everything we do,” says Elfa Moraitakis, CEO of SydWest. “Every program we deliver is about creating spaces where people feel valued and supported. On International Migrants Day, we celebrate the resilience and achievements of migrant women and families who enrich our communities every day.”
Stories of Transformation
One inspiring story is Sara’s (pseudonym) journey to digital confidence. Arriving in Australia as a single mother, Sara initially faced challenges with everyday tasks due to limited English and digital skills. Through SydWest’s Digital Sisters Program, she learned to navigate online platforms, manage school communications, and access essential services. Today, Sara confidently completes applications, engages with her children’s education, and feels empowered to build a bright future. “I feel more confident now. I can go out, speak to people, and handle things by myself,” she says.
Another success story is the playgroup program that helped Layla (pseudonym) and her young son thrive. Layla joined SydWest’s multicultural playgroup after arriving from Afghanistan. Initially shy and unfamiliar with local parenting resources, she soon found a welcoming space where her child could learn and play while she connected with other mothers. Through the program, Layla accessed early childhood development advice and English conversation practices, building confidence and friendships. Today, her son is ready for preschool, and Layla feels part of a supportive community.
Collaboration for Greater Impact
SydWest is proud to lead the Western Sydney Region Settlement Consortium (WSRSC), a collaboration of four organisations working together to create opportunities and strengthen community connections. This year, the consortium achieved a 96.6% client satisfaction rate and hosted landmark events such as Refugee Week and the Pasifika Forum, celebrating diversity and fostering belonging.
“Our collective voice through WSRSC is powerful,” adds Elfa. “Together, we are opening doors to housing, employment, and digital access – ensuring that every newcomer has the opportunity to thrive.”
