Brisbane Olympic Stadium will benefit from engagement of local, respected architects

Australian Institute of Architects - Queensland Chapter < 1 min read

The Queensland Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects welcomes the COX Architecture and Hassell-led partnership to advance Brisbane Olympic Stadium.

The Institute applauds the Queensland Government for backing internationally respected practices with deep local roots and a proven record of delivering complex public projects. COX and Hassell are renowned not only for stadium expertise but also for design excellence, sustainability, and the seamless integration of architecture, landscape, and public realm.

“This decision signals the value of locally relevant, design-led architecture for one of the most significant public projects in Queensland’s history,” said Caroline Stalker - Australian Institute of Architects, Queensland Chapter President. “It reflects confidence in firms that understand Brisbane’s climate, culture and urban context, and have demonstrated leadership in sustainable and people-focused design.”

As the project moves forward, the Institute emphasises maintaining design quality throughout delivery. The Government is encouraged to establish a formal design review process, supported by an independent Design Integrity Panel led by the Queensland Government Architect.

“A robust design integrity panel is essential to safeguard design excellence from concept through to completion,” said Ms Stalker.  “Such a panel can maximise public value and ensure the community receives the quality, sustainability and legacy outcomes we have been promised.”

The Australian Institute of Architects stands ready to support the Government and project team in ensuring the Brisbane Olympic Stadium becomes a landmark of enduring architectural, civic, and environmental value for Queensland.

Shifting Weather Patterns Demand Climate Responsive Housing Design

With South Australia's election just days away, the Australian Institute of Architects urges all parties to prioritise climate-adaptive design in housing reforms amid intensifying weather shifts like prolonged droughts and flooding rains. “Housing is climate infrastructure,” said SA Chapter President Kirstie Coultas. “Good design reduces energy demand, lowers household bills and improves health outcomes during heat events.” The Institute calls for robust, transparent implementation of the National Construction Code to deliver clear gains in energy efficiency, accessibility and resilience. This can provide industry certainty and clarity while addressing SA’s housing challenges. “Good design is not an added cost — it…

Design Thinking Must Lead Nation-Building Infrastructure

The Australian Institute of Architects welcomes Infrastructure Australia’s 2026 Infrastructure Priority List, highlighting 68 key projects for transport, water, freight, and energy—but insists design thinking must drive this work to deliver lasting value. National President Adam Haddow FRAIA emphasised: “Establishing priorities is vital, we need to ensure these priorities can also deliver impact, and create liveable and resilient communities to unlock affordable housing.” High-capacity urban transport and climate-resilient water systems are generational gamechangers, but only with strong design leadership will that deliver a boost to productivity and connectivity. “Good design has a direct bearing on whether infrastructure contributes positively to…
