Crafting a Legacy – Icons of Australian Boatbuilding

Norman R Wright & Sons vessels – January 16-20

The Australian National Maritime Museum is proud to announce a special summer display celebrating the legacy of Norman R Wright & Sons, one of Australia’s most renowned boatbuilding firms. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the rich history and craftsmanship of this iconic family business, as part of the museum’s summer program. The museum will host 14 Wright designed vessels dating from 1913 to 2010.

Founded in 1909 by Norman Wright Snr in Newstead, Brisbane, the company began with a vision and a modest boatyard. Over three generations, Norman R Wright & Sons has earned international recognition for its pleasure craft and workboats, many of which continue to grace Australian waters today.

The Wright family’s contribution extends beyond craftsmanship. Norman Jnr, who learned the trade from his father, and Ron Wright, Queensland’s first naval architect and Olympic sailor, played pivotal roles in the company’s evolution.

During World War II, the shipyard became a vital part of the Allied war effort, refitting vessels and building new craft for military use. Post-war, the demand for workboats surged, and the yard responded by producing trawlers, luggers, and vessels for Queensland’s burgeoning tourist resorts.

In 1953, the company’s name changed to Norman R Wright & Sons Pty Ltd, reflecting a deep family commitment to boatbuilding. The third generation, represented by Ron’s sons Bill and Ian, continued the tradition, navigating new challenges and technological advancements in the industry. Notable achievements include the creation of cutting-edge yachts such as Beryl May (later South Pacific II) and Bali Hai in the 1960s.

The 1990s marked a renaissance for the company, with the construction of new-generation City Cats and ongoing production of pleasure and commercial craft of the highest quality. Today, Norman R Wright & Sons stands as a testament to Australian ingenuity, resilience, and family legacy.
