Public Hospital Funding an Ongoing Disaster for Patients

Doctors Reform Society < 1 mins read

“Patients will continue to languish for months and years on public hospital waiting lists despite the announcement of a record $25 billion Federal funding for public hospitals, said Dr Tim Woodruff, President”, Doctors Reform Society. It’s all about smoke and mirrors, said Woodruff. Of course it’s a record spend. “Any new spending will be a record because our population is growing, it is aging, and demand is increasing. It’s a scratched record.”

“What we really want to know is whether this new spending increases the Federal contribution up towards the 50% level it was set at decades ago. It has hovered just above 40% since the Howard years despite Labor’s promise to substantially increase it, most recently promising it would be 42.5% by 2030. The big numbers announcement will increase that percentage a little, but the amount is unstated because it will be small”.

“But more than that,” said Dr Woodruff,” the Federal Government is largely responsible for the one in ten patients languishing in hospital unnecessarily, waiting for an aged care package or an aged care place. There is no promise to address the 120 thousand waiting list to get an aged care package.”

“it is worth noting,” said Dr Woodruff, “that the other part of the public hospital under funding debacle, the inadequate primary care funding which leads to preventable admissions and attendances to hospitals, is being addressed at a federal level, albeit quite slowly.”

ACT continues to step ahead in promised alcohol delivery reforms

The ACT is one step closer to implementing life-saving updates to its alcohol delivery laws, as advocates urge the territory government to implement its Liquor Amendment Bill as soon as possible, following today’s report from the parliamentary committee looking at the Bill. “We welcome the Committee’s support of the Bill, and in particular its recommendation that the ACT Government amend the Bill to make harm minimisation the paramount object of the Liquor Act,” said Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) CEO Ayla Chorley. “This would mean any government decisions relating to alcohol, such as approving liquor licences, must place…

Weld Australia Welcomes Landmark AUKUS Investment in South Australia

Weld Australia has welcomed the Albanese and Malinauskas Governments’ announcement of a $3.9 billion investment into the Submarine Construction Yard at Osborne, describing it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Australia’s advanced manufacturing industry. The investment forms part of a projected $30 billion infrastructure program over coming decades and will support the construction of Australia’s conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS, creating nearly 10,000 jobs across South Australia alone. For Weld Australia, the peak body representing the nation’s welding industry, the announcement signals not just economic stimulus, but a defining moment for sovereign industrial capability. “This is nation-building at its most strategic,”…
