A trio of OneSchool Global (OSG) students from Australia and New Zealand has had their research on supercooled water published in a leading international scientific journal.
OSG Secondary Teacher Dr Peter Wilson collaborated on the paper, which has now appeared in the Japan Journal of Research, with Sydney students, Thomasin Fooks and Kelsie Kennard, and Hastings student Makana Senior.
Dr Wilson said the research paper was the culmination of several recent experiments carried out by the students to explore how supercooled water behaves.
“Supercooled water is water that has been cooled below its freezing point without becoming a solid, and we wanted to look closely at how it behaves,” said Professor Wilson.
“When water is repeatedly cooled to below freezing, freezes and is warmed, the temperature at which it freezes can be carefully documented, with enough repeats – and the students were experimenting to find out more about the spread of freezing temperatures.
“To be published in a scientific research journal at such a young age is a fantastic achievement, and I congratulate the students for committing themselves to this work.”
Dr Wilson, who is also an Adjunct Professor of Physics at The University of California San Diego, established a STEM Scholars Program for OSG students in 2024.
Since then, OSG students from 19 different countries have taken part in the program that encourages deeper learning beyond the curriculum.
“The STEM Scholars Program gives students the opportunity to explore how the world works, as well supporting them to collaborate with their peers across the world,” said Dr Wilson.
