SWEET AS PIE: THE MOST POPULAR TYPES OF PIES REVEALED

MyFitnessPal 2 mins read

Sydney, Australia, 23 January, 2026 – This National Pie Day (23.01.26), new data from nutrition and food tracking app, MyFitnessPal, has finally settled one of the biggest modern debates of our time - what is the most popular type of Aussie pie?

According to data logged by active users in Australia between December 1, 2024 to December 1, 2025, the most popular type of Aussie pies, in order, are:

  1. Meat pie

  2. Shepherd’s/Cottage pie

  3. Apple pie

  4. Chicken pie

  5. Cheese pie

  6. Mince pie

  7. Potato pie

  8. Banoffee pie

  9. Vegetable pie

  10. Lemon meringue pie

Overall, women dominate in pie logging in Australia, making up 61% of all pie logs on the app, while the most common age group across genders to enjoy Australia's favourite tradition is 25–34 years of age. The most popular time to enjoy an Aussie pie is from 11am - 12pm, then rises again from 5-6pm for some Aussies looking for a dinner choice.

Nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador, Michaela Sparrow, said, “An Aussie pie isn’t just food, it’s tradition wrapped in pastry. We don’t just eat pies—we grow up with them. A pie in hand is practically a national love language.”

“The data from MyFitnessPal shows that the humble meat pie continues to be the overwhelming favourite amongst Aussies, enjoyed all hours of the day. But like anything in nutrition or health, it's all about a balanced mindset.

“The good news is that there are ways to enjoy pies without guilt. For example, vegetable-loaded pies, like spinach, mushroom, lentil, or mixed veg, are typically higher in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which help with digestion and overall health. Lean protein pies or whole-grain or wholemeal crust pies are also good alternatives.

“Pairing your favourite pie with a side salad or veggies and keeping portions reasonable also helps to enjoy Australia’s most beloved food tradition.”

“Tracking your nutrition and food, through apps and tools like MyFitnessPal, are a great way to take the guesswork out of food choices and plan for the right nutrition goals that work for you,” added Michaela.
