It’s the numbers, stupid! — Sustainable Population Australia rejects race-based immigration rhetoric

Sustainable Popultion Australia 2 mins read

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) has rejected any suggestion that immigrants should be judged by race, religion or cultural background, stating that Australia’s population challenges are driven by scale, not identity.

SPA argues that rapid population expansion — from any source — is placing pressure on:

• Housing affordability and availability

Infrastructure funding and service delivery

Environmental sustainability and biodiversity

• Commute times and congestion

• Public finances and long-term budget sustainability

SPA experts are available for further comment

Quotes Attributable to Mr Strachan:

“Australia must set migration levels that are environmentally, economically and socially responsible.”

“Targeting migrants by values, ethnicity or faith is divisive and unnecessary. Australia’s environmental, housing and infrastructure pressures are about numbers. They are not about where people come from.”

“In the year to 30 June 2025, Australia's population grew by roughly 420,000 people, including 306,000 from net overseas migration, equivalent to the entire city of Wollongong.”

“To maintain the same quality of life (and assuming average sizes are maintained) Australia should have built a net of 105 schools, 168,000 houses and 8 hospitals in the past year. Instead, the most recent figures indicate that Australia has built a net of 24 schools, 147,000 houses and ambulance ramping rates at hospitals around the nation are a clear indication of the hospital bed situation.”

“The historically unprecedented intake levels require unprecedented levels of infrastructure development.  This is simply not happening. The consequences are visible in housing shortages, infrastructure strain and environmental degradation.”

“Immigration has often been presented as a solution to skills shortages and fiscal pressures. However, when intake consistently outpaces infrastructure and housing capacity, it compounds the very problems it claims to solve.”

“Between 35 and 50 per cent of older Australians were born overseas, reflecting Australia’s long history as a successful multicultural nation. Our position is not anti-immigrant. It is pro-sustainability.”

Five Year Koala Study Reveals New Populations in Gippsland

A five year study of two forest areas in south east, South Gippsland has found a relatively unknown population of Strzelecki koalas. Strzelecki koalas are Victoria's and South Australia's only genetically diverse koalas, not impacted by Victoria's translocation program. The surveys were based on locating koala scats (faeces). Land Use Researcher from Friends of the Earth Anthony Amis said "The study of Mullungdung and Won Wron State Forests has revealed a population of about 700 koalas. This could amount to a quarter of the entire Strzelecki koala population. It's imperative that the State Government increase the reserve status of these…
